With just a tweet, San Antonio nonprofit American Sunrise earns $10,000 grant from Deluxe Corporation Foundation
With a few simple but powerful words and the click of the “send” button, 10 small nonprofits have an extra $10,000 each today thanks to the Deluxe Corporation Foundation “Short & Tweet” Grants Program. Part of Deluxe Corporation’s yearlong 100th anniversary celebration, the Short & Tweet Grants Program replaced the customary grant application with a succinct and appealing entry – a tweet.
American Sunrise, a San Antonio-based nonprofit, became one of 10 recipients from nine states in Deluxe Foundation’s first-ever Twitter-based grant program. The winning organizations – which serve communities nationwide – have primary missions based in economic empowerment, creating tomorrow’s workforce, promoting financial literacy, crisis assistance or the arts.
American Sunrise focuses on providing education and enrichment opportunities in the poorest square mile of San Antonio, including literacy and after-school services. The nonprofit has expressed interest in applying its grant to its Learning Center, where young students can receive individualized tutoring and adults can take computer classes.
“We received more than 900 nominations from nonprofits across the country, nonprofits that work tirelessly to improve their communities and enrich lives,” said Amanda Brinkman, chief brand and communications officer for Deluxe. “American Sunrise stood out as an organization whose work in bringing opportunity to all of San Antonio sets the example for great nonprofit work. We are proud to award them a $10,000 grant.”
By developing the Short & Tweet Grants Program, the Deluxe Foundation sought to take the “heavy lifting” out of the grant application process in this one-time opportunity. The grant program ran for only two weeks, from Oct. 21 to Nov. 4. Once the nonprofit submitted their Tweet to apply for the grant, along with #DeluxeCares, they received a follow-up message, directing the nonprofit staff to the Deluxe Cares website, where additional information was required to help the judging panel determine the finalists and eventually the winners.
The Deluxe Corporation Foundation focuses on long-term solutions that help people, businesses, and communities thrive and grow. Since 1954, the foundation has donated more than $100 million to charitable organizations. Short & Tweet sparked significant social media activity, as supporters of the nonprofits shared their Tweets and stories online, boosting awareness of the nonprofits and the Deluxe Foundation program. In total, #DeluxeCares was used more than 5,000 times.
