‘Mix It Up’ math program extended, revised with grant
The Mathematics, Science, and Technology Teacher Preparation Academy program at Texas State University-San Marcos, more commonly known as Mix It Up, has been awarded a $200,000 extension grant by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
“Mix It Up” is administered by Selina Vasquez-Mireles of the Texas State math department. The grant supplements a previous award of $699,541, extening the project until Dec. 31, 2012.
The grant has been redesigned to focus on three important stages of becoming a mathematics teacher: mathematics and certification courses, student teaching and examinations, and induction. The goal is to build strong learning communities which will serve to support new teachers throughout their college years, in addition to, their first few years as teachers. As a result, the revised program will narrow its scope to pre-service teachers and novice teachers. It will, however, continue to support current graduate students through completion.
