UHV receives $25,000 grant for nursing scholarships
Press Release

April, 2009

The University of Houston-Victoria School of Nursing recently received $25,000 for scholarships from the Greater Texas Foundation.

The donation creates the Rising to the Challenge scholarships that will pay for tuition, books and fees for nursing transfer students taking classes in Victoria and Sugar Land.

“Scholarships are one of our greatest needs at the School of Nursing,” founding Dean Kathryn Tart said. “This generous donation by the Greater Texas Foundation will help us recruit more nurses to advance their education and improve the quality of care for everyone in the communities we serve.”

Scholarships enable many nursing students to continue their educations who otherwise would not be able afford to do so. The school also uses such scholarships to recruit students who are underrepresented in the field of nursing, including those under the age of 30, men, Hispanics and other minorities.

The School of Nursing is now finalizing details about the scholarship, including the application process, Tart said. The first Rising to the Challenge scholarships should be awarded for the 2009 summer semester.

“Scholarships make it possible for anyone to achieve the dream of a college degree, regardless of their financial background or station in life,” said Suzanne LaBrecque, UHV provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Partners like the Greater Texas Foundation are vital to achieving our mission of educating the public.”

A foundation representative said it was something the organization was glad to do.

“We’re pleased to be able to provide this support for the nursing students at UHV,” Executive Director Wynn Rosser said. “This grant is a wonderful example of how philanthropic organizations and public institutions can work together to address our state’s critical needs.”

The Bryan-based Greater Texas Foundation supports excellence in education by increasing access for all Texans and improving educational quality through public-private partnerships. Since 2003, the foundation has awarded more than $6.7 million in scholarship grants to post-secondary institutions in Texas.

In Victoria and Sugar Land, the UHV School of Nursing offers a Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, a Master of Science in Nursing with concentrations in nurse education and nurse administration, and a RN to MSN Bridge program. The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region, is an upper-level institution that offers undergraduate and graduate students more than 30 degree programs and concentrations in the Schools of Arts & Sciences, Business, Nursing, and Education. A faculty of experts at UHV offers students individual attention to help them succeed, whether learning in a classroom or online. UHV is defined more as a delivery system than as a location, as the university extends instruction, learning support, student services and community outreach to any area. Although it serves primarily commuting students from Victoria and surrounding counties, UHV also offers degree programs, in collaboration with other UH System institutions, at two off-campus centers in Fort Bend County and offers courses at a number of off-campus sites in the region. Since its founding in 1973, outreach, community partnerships and collaboration have characterized UHV’s history and mission
