TexasNonprofits Think Tank Invites Ronald K. Calgaard, Ph.D. to Membership

The TexasNonprofits (TXNP) Advisory Board is proud to welcome Dr. Ronald Calgaard to the Texas Think Tank. TexasNonprofits believes in and supports the efforts of education and educators in Texas, and we feel that Dr. Calgaard's participation will lend great insight on education and business practices in Texas to the Texas Think Tank", said Jacqueline Beretta, Founder and Editor of TXNP.

Ronald K. Calgaard, born in 1937, began his professional career in 1963 as a professor of economics at the University of Kansas. In 1973, he was appointed Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University. From July 1979 through June 1999, Dr. Calgaard served as President of Trinity University; the longest sitting president in the history of the university. During his tenure as president, Trinity achieved national recognition for excellence in liberal arts and sciences education. After retiring from Trinity University in 1999, Dr. Calgaard was appointed President Emeritus of the University, and became Chairman of the Board of The Trust Company.

Dr. Calgaard joined Austin, Calvert & Flavin, Inc. in March 2000 and was appointed Chairman in December 2001, and served as Chief Executive Officer since October 2003. He retired from Austin Calvert & Flavin in early 2006.

Dr. Calgaard is a graduate of Luther College (Iowa) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He received his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in economics from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Calgaard currently serves on various corporate and civic boards, including Valero Energy Corporation, The Trust Company, St. Mary’s Hall, Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, Cancer Therapy and Research Center, San Antonio Museum of Art, United Way of Bexar County, and Luther College.

Dr. Calgaard and his wife Gene have two married children, Lisa and Peter Sands and Kent and Francie Calgaard, and are the proud parents of two grandchildren Kathleen and Eliot. They are members of the First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio where he serves as an elder.

The Texas Think Tank currently has 14 distinguished members selected from diverse vocational backgrounds in public, private, and nonprofit sectors. They meet bi-annually to discuss topics related to the leveraging of resources and information to improve nonprofit capabilities to benefit Texans. Other issues include facilitating the grant search process for nonprofits, methods for encouraging corporate philanthropy, expanding the reach of Foundations giving in Texas, and fostering multiple levels of collaboration.

Other members are currently Bruce Esterline of Dallas, Greg Flores of San Antonio, Sandra Gilliland of Amarillo, Maggie McCarthy of Waco, Curtis Meadows of Dallas, Dr. Bill Reaves of the Woodlands, Benjamin Rodriguez of San Antonio, Marion Lee of San Antonio, Fred Smith of Tyler, Graham Weston of San Antonio, Valleau Wilkie of Fort Worth, Dr. Steve Murdock of San Antonio, and Jacqueline Beretta of San Antonio.
