Challenge Accepted - San Antonio Sports Sidelines - May 2017
San Antonio Sports

May, 2017

Challenge Accepted
On May 13, we are launching the eighth annual San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas with the District 4 Heroes 5K. More than 2,500 people have registered to run, jog or walk and celebrate fitness. Beginning May 15, free weekly fitness activities and frequent health screenings are scheduled at eight sites throughout the rest of the summer to help participants get fit and track their progress. Fit Family Challenge offers more than $25,000 in cash and prize incentives, such as tickets to sporting events and movies, to give families that extra bit of motivation to stay involved in the program.
A grant from the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation and support from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and other sponsors make this family-oriented fitness program possible. The program is open to all families in Bexar County. However, it targets neighborhoods that have the highest rates of diabetes and obesity. Participants engage in pre- and post-event surveys to help them assess their progress toward meeting health and fitness goals and also help them to "know their numbers" to create awareness of potential health risks. Click here to see last year's program results. In an effort to eliminate barriers to participation, the weekly events take place at schools and churches in the target neighborhoods.
Making fitness accessible and fun to these families is half the battle in improving the overall health of the San Antonio community. When we provide families education along with enjoyable activities, they handle the rest. Combined with free health screenings and prizes, the 2017 Fit Family Challenge continues our long-term efforts to make a real improvement in San Antonio's health.
Join us at one of our weekly fitness classes or at one of our family-friendly Saturday morning Big Events. You can find a schedule at
Volunteer Spotlight: Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity
At a UTSA volunteer fair last fall, the men of Sigma Lambda Beta learned about San Antonio Sports and how their group could help at events. According to Carlos Mejia, San Antonio Sports was "out of the norm" from other organizations they've helped. Recently, several members volunteered at the i play! afterschool tennis tournament. From squeegeeing courts after it rained to
keeping score, we appreciated their help. While tennis was Carlos' favorite event, the most popular event of the group was setting up for the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute. "Seeing all the auction items on display, the scenery of the was a lot to take in." With more than 200 items, set up for the auction is a lot of work. The men of Sigma Lambda Beta were a great help.
San Antonio Sports is always looking for groups to volunteer at our events. To learn more, contact Tony Benke at or 210-820-2126.
