Building Places to Play
In 2006, City of San Antonio and Bexar County leaders asked San Antonio Sports to research the status of local sports and recreation facilities and present our recommendations. That strategic sports facility development plan, titled "Building a Healthier Tomorrow," outlined recommendations that would benefit the physical health of our families, meet the demand for athletic facilities in our fast-growing community and develop quality competitive venues that would attract economic-generating sporting events. Our assessment informed selection of the 13 facility projects for which voters overwhelmingly approved funding in the 2008 extension of the visitor tax. Today, those facilities like Mission Concepción Sports Park and Northside Swim Center, are thriving.
We have accomplished much since 2006, but there is more to do, so we have updated our "Building a Healthier Tomorrow" plan and invite you to offer feedback. You may find it here . This is a dynamic document, so it will change to reflect our community's needs. We have shared it with those who are developing San Antonio's first modern comprehensive plan through the SA Tomorrow initiative. Our population is expected to grow by 1 million people by 2040, so please take time to read the plan, offer your feedback and share it with others who care that we have the sports and recreation facilities to support a healthy quality of life for our citizens now and in the future.
Taking the Plunge

Congratulations to all the Edgers who took the plunge on Saturday, May 7 on behalf of San Antonio Sports and Junior Achievement of South Texas, reppelling down the Marriott Rivercenter hotel! More than 70 went Over the Edge. The following staff, board, and San Antonio Sports champions participated:
We appreciate these brave (or crazy) souls, and everyone who donated on their behalf, for supporting San Antonio Sports.
Game on! 2016 Corporate Cup Sells Out
Eighty-two teams will be vying in four divisions to be named Corporate Cup champions on June 4 at the University of the Incarnate Word. Go!Kids Celebrate at SeaWorld

More than 21,000 elementary students completed the 2016 University Health System Go!Kids Challenge™, earning two tickets to Go!Kids Challenge Day at SeaWorld San Antonio on April 10. More than 12,000 Go!Kids and their families enjoyed the theme park on a beautiful spring day.
This was the 13th anniversary of the program, which is offered free to schools around San Antonio. Kids were asked to complete five fitness activities each week for six weeks, eat their fruits and veggies and drink water. Activities include jumping rope, jumping jacks, playing sports, playing outside, running and walking, and push-ups. We want to motivate children to be active every day and embrace an active lifestyle. The Go!Kids Challenge helps children understand that fitness can be fun, and if it's fun, it can become a daily habit.
i play! afterschool Kids Make a Racquet
The threat of rainy weather moved the i play! afterschool Najim Family Foundation Tennis Tournament indoors, but it didn't stop hundreds of kids from 45 schools from showing off their tennis skills on a recent Saturday morning. Nineteen courts were assembled inside the Alamodome, where one staff member pointed out "it's always sunny and 72 degrees."
The tournament culminated a five-week tennis unit which focused on skills such as forehand and backhand grip, serving and keeping the ball in play, and core values such as courtesy and respect. Congratulations to JT Brackenridge Elementary for taking home the Najim Cup. Briscoe Elementary was second, and Riverside Park was third.
This was the final tournament in the 2015-16 i play! afterschool year. Thanks to all the foundations, community partners and sponsors for supporting this program, which truly demonstrates the transformational power of sport.

Sponsor profile: Ancira

Thanks to Ancira for sponsoring San Antonio Sports. Ancira has been the title sponsor of the Bexar County Games since their inception in 2013. Additionally, April Ancira is a member of our board of directors and serves on the youth committee. Ancira's support helps San Antonio Sports make a difference in our community.
Volunteer profile: Spurs Sorority
The women from Trinity University's Spurs Sorority have been volunteering with San Antonio Sports for several years. This reliable and cheerful group has helped at our i play! afterschool golf tournament, the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, and staffed a water station for the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon. Service chair Michaela Zapata says they enjoy helping San Antonio Sports. "We get to see the kids and parents and watch the experience play itself out. Many of our other volunteer opportunities take place behind the scenes. With San Antonio Sports we get to watch and enjoy things as they take place." Spurs Sorority was originally founded more than 80 years ago as a pep club to spur on the Trinity athletes, "so helping local organizations is a tribute to those roots, and San Antonio Sports is a perfect fit," she explains.
If you'd like to volunteer and watch things unfold at any of our events, please click here and visit our volunteer web page.
