CALENDAR LISTING FEB. 23 -- Texas CASA to Honor Governor Abbott &First Lady as Champions for Children in Care

WHAT: Texas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), the statewide organization of 72 local programs that recruit and train volunteers to advocate for children in the child protection system, will host its annual Champion Recognition Luncheon in Austin on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016. 


WHO: Governor Greg Abbott, accompanied by First Lady Cecilia Abbott, will offer remarks regarding the critical role CASA continues to play in the lives of Texas’ most vulnerable children: children in the child protection system who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, through no fault of their own.

The Honorable Eva Guzman – Justice, Supreme Court of Texas; Chair, Permanent Judicial Commission for Children, Youth and Families 


Former foster youth – Sharing the emotional story of their journey through the child protection system with the support of one consistent adult presence, a supportive CASA volunteer

WHY: The mission of Texas CASA is to support local CASA volunteer advocacy programs and to advocate for effective public policy for children in the child protection system. The organization’s vision of a safe and positive future for all Texas children could not be achieved without having dedicated champions like Governor Abbott and the First Lady committed to our cause. With their support, the CASA network in Texas can reach our goal of one day providing a CASA volunteer for every child who needs one. 


Local CASA programs recruit, train and supervise volunteers to speak up in court and represent the best interests of children in the child protection system, and help guide them to safe and permanent homes as quickly as possible. Last year, 8,476 well-trained and screened
