GCBO September E-news
Gulf Coast Bird Observatory

September, 2015

XHX is Here!

We've already started seeing the front runners of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird migration and there are many more to come. This year Xtreme Hummingbird Xtravaganza will be on the two middle Saturdays in September, the 12th and the 19th. We are changing things up a bit this year and holding the event from 8:00am until 1:00pm both days. On the 12th, master naturalist Barbara Burkhardt will talk about Gardening for Hummingbirds & Butterflies. On the 19th, Cliff Shackelford, Texas State Ornithologist, will talk about his book Hummingbirds of Texas and will sign books following his talk. In addition, you can adopt a hummingbird and visit our nature store where you will find a wide selection of hummingbird feeders, books, and other fun stuff. We will have hummingbird plants on sale and the Master Naturalists will be bringing lots of live critters for the kids to enjoy. This year we will also have breakfast and lunch food items available for sale. For more information check the flyer on our website. The success of this event depends greatly on volunteer participation so if you want to volunteer to help, contact Carol

Birdies for the Birds Redux

After the rain and flood last March, plans and preparations are well underway for our rescheduled October 5th Birdies for the Birds Golf Tournament. We want to recognize and thank these groups for their support:

Freeport LNG - Title Sponsor
SI Group - Eagle Sponsor
Phillips 66 - Eagle Sponsor
King Trust - Eagle Sponsor
RCI Engineering - Eagle Sponsor
CenterPoint Energy - Eagle Sponsor

There is still plenty of time to be a part of the tournament. We are seeking sponsors at all levels, as well as teams and players. If you want to participate, please contact Carol and she can provide you with all the details. Check out theflier and sponsorship form.

Smith Point Hawk Watch Ramps Up

The Smith Point Hawk Watch is humming along and we are starting to see some numbers of birds. So far we've counted 65 Swallow-tailed Kites with one flock of 23! Raptor numbers will really be picking up in September so don't miss the show. If you plan on bringing a field trip, please let Sue know so we can have some volunteers on hand to assist. We need volunteers to record, count, spot, or keep the Bob energized on slow days. Bob enjoys teaching hawk identification but it works best if volunteer counters have some bird watching experience. Recording and spotting only require enthusiasm! If you can volunteer this year, please contact Sue.

Winter RV Host

Our current RV hosts are planning their departure for the end of September so we will have an open RV spot beginning October 1st. Come spend the winter with us on our beautiful 34-acre forested sanctuary just 5 minutes from town! In exchange for a beautiful spot to spend the winter, we ask for assistance around the sanctuary including opening the gate on weekends, greeting visitors, doing light maintenance and mowing, and other duties that might come up. If interested, you can find our ad on and read the full description. Search for ads in Texas and then scroll down to find GCBO. Or check out the ad on our website where you can download the application.

Monthly Bird Banding at GCBO

September is here and that means hummingbirds! This month  we will hold our XHX festival on bird banding day so unless we run out of hummers we won't be banding any passerines. See above for XHX details. See the map on our webpage for directions or use your GPS to take you to 299 Hwy 332 West, Lake Jackson, TX.

Photo of the Month

This weeks photo of the month comes from Brooks Short who snapped this photo of a Mourning Warbler at last month's bird banding session. It's only the second time this species has been banded at GCBO!
