The absence of leadership is equally dramatic in its effects. When we start in our career, most of our energies and efforts are directed to learning.These foundations are an essential part of your development but they are unlikely to be a major factor in determining how far you climb the leadership ladder.  So what attributes do you need to develop to avoid hitting a frustrating ceiling? __________________________________________________     Advocacy Push: Tell Senators to Act on the America Gives More Act

Please join us as we raise our voices to the Senate, asking them to pass the invaluable giving incentives in the America Gives More Act (H.R.644) as soon as possible. The America Gives More Act (H.R. 644) helps foundations invest in communities across the country.

To recap how we got to where we are today, in February the U.S. House of Representatives passed the America Gives More Act with a bipartisan vote of more than two-thirds. This bill contains four key provisions for the charitable sector:

  • A provision to make the IRA charitable rollover permanent;
  • A provision to simplify the private foundation excise tax to a single rate of one percent;
  • A provision to make permanent the enhanced deduction for contributions of food inventory;
  • A provision to make contributions of conservation easements permanent law.

The three charitable giving incentives expired for the fifth time in recent years on January 1, 2015, after multiple efforts to restore them proved unsuccessful last year and they were ultimately extended for only 2 weeks of 2014. Lawmakers this year have expressed interest in addressing these giving provisions early on in the year rather than relying on short-term measures passed at the end of the year.

We need you — nonprofit leaders on the ground in our community — to reach out to your Senators today and encourage them to support community investments now. As a constituent, your voice is invaluable!

BoardEffect is an online portal that streamlines board work and provides directors easy access to important information. Area Foundation Membership includes the use of this tool, which is accessible via computer or a free iPad app.  We encourage members to take advantage of this resource, because:

  • Creating your board packet becomes a simple task of dropping files into an online agenda, customized to fit the order of your board meetings;
  • Organizing meetings becomes simple with BoardEffect's RSVP tool -- administrators survey board members on dates that work for their schedules and then select the most popular date with one click;
  • Committee and board collaboration becomes streamlined with online discussion, live chat and voting tools.

We offer free training for members to learn how BoardEffect can help your board communicate and collaborate effectively and improve efficiency.  Training includes an overview and tour of the portal, tips for management and administration of BoardEffect, and a Q&A/practice session.

The Big Give SA is just around the corner!

 On May 5th, 2015, San Antonio and surrounding counties will come together for 24 hours of nonprofit giving during the Big Give S.A. It’s South Central Texas’ second annual giving day, and it’s your chance to make a real impact, as part of family and community. 

All you have to do is commit to donating to your favorite organization(s) on May 5th through the Big Give SA website: and you will help them become eligible for prize money and matching dollar opportunities.

Wage and Benefit Survey  

Every year we receive inquiries about appropriate wages for nonprofit staff. 

Werling Associates, Inc. would like to invite you to participate in the 2015 San Antonio Not-For-Profit Wage and Benefit Survey.

The survey is sponsored by the San Antonio Area Foundation and funded by the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation.

Werling Associates, Inc. has conducted a nonprofit survey in the San Antonio area since 1998. Last year’s survey included data for 99 jobs from 93 agencies. The final report of the survey will include a thorough analysis of job-specific compensation data, thus providing organizations with the information necessary to make reliable and equitable financial decisions.

All survey participants will receive a FREE copy of the final report.
