The Road to the Final Four®

I returned Tuesday from the 2015 NCAA® Men's Final Four® in Indianapolis after participating in several behind-the-scene meetings and site visits for future hosts. I was joined by members of the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) and we agree that the NCAA and the local organizing committee from Indianapolis did a fantastic job of hosting this marquee event.

The Final Four® has grown significantly since we last hosted in 2008. The weekend is a flurry of activities for fans of all ages, from the Final Four Fan Fest, presented by Capital One, to the NCAA March Madness Music Festival that featured Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum, Imagine Dragons and Rihanna. More than 100,000 fans attended the three-day music festival. And the stadium was sold out with over 70,000 fans attending each of the games.

In many ways, Indy is a similar site to San Antonio because of the close proximity of hotels, its convention center, White River State Park and Lucas Oil Stadium. But thanks to the new convention center expansion, Hemisfair Park redevelopment and perhaps our greatest asset, the River Walk, San Antonio's footprint for the 2018 Men's Final Four will be tighter and even more walkable than Indianapolis.

Our group heard many times how happy fans, coaches, athletes and administrators were that the Final Four® was returning to San Antonio. San Antonio is consistently recognized as one of the top host cities for this prestigious event.

March 31, 2018 will be here before we know it! Members of our bid team, including UTSA's Lynn Hickey and Sherman Corbett, the Alamodome's Nick Langella, San Antonio Sports' Jenny Carnes and Ross Davis, the Convention, Sports and Entertainment Facilities' Michael Sawaya and Gina San Agustin, and the San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau's Sarah Linley benefited from these meetings and site visits and look forward to hosting a great Final Four in 2018!

Russ Bookbinder
President and CEO

2015 is the year of swimming in San Antonio! San Antonio will be the site of four major swimming competitions, which gives us the perfect opportunity to create awareness of how important it is that every person -- kids and adults -- learns how to swim, increase the number of swim lessons available in our community and encourage people to embrace the life-long sport of swimming.

VIVA SWIM For Life presented by University Health System in conjunction with USA Swimming celebrates the sport of swimming while connecting children and their families to swim lessons.

"Knowing how to swim can save your life," said Russ Bookbinder, President and CEO of San Antonio Sports. "We're all bound to find ourselves near water at one time or another, whether it's a river, lake or pool. VIVA SWIM connects children and their families to swim lessons taught by qualified instructors at public and private pools."

The VIVA SWIM website lists organizations and pools throughout San Antonio that offer swim lessons. Providers determine class schedules and costs. After completing lessons, participants receive a certificate, which also provides an opportunity for them to receive a medal recognizing their accomplishment from an Olympian at the Nationwide U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championship, April 25 or Phillips 66 National Championships, August 6-10.

"San Antonio is one of swimming's top metropolitan areas and VIVA Swim is an important next step to create a long-lasting impact within multicultural communities," said USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus. "Learn to swim initiatives like VIVA Swim and USA Swimming Foundation's Make a Splash are significant in teaching children critical life-saving swimming skills. It's an exciting time for swimming in San Antonio, with this summer's Phillips 66 National Championships and Speedo Junior National Championships, and our Olympic Team Training Camp next July."

Two More SPARKs Open

Two more SPARKs (school parks) have opened at Larkspur and Serna Elementary Schools, both in the North East Independent School District. SPARK is a school park program that turns public elementary and middle school property into neighborhood parks to be enjoyed by the community outside of school hours. Now the school children and surrounding neighborhood's families can enjoy amenities such as covered playgrounds, football/soccer fields, disc golf and more after school hours. SPARK is an initiative of San Antonio Sports in partnership with the City of San Antonio and participating school districts.

Big Give S.A.

San Antonio Sports will be participating in the Big Give S.A., a 24-hour day of giving that will take place on May 6, 2015. Hundreds of organizations are part of this effort which seeks to increase public awareness of the impact local nonprofits make in addressing our community's social challenges, bringing nonprofits and donors together, and expanding the idea of online giving. Please like San Antonio Sports on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. On May 5 we will need your help sharing our posts and spreading the word. This is a great opportunity through social media to familiarize people unacquainted with our organization. All of the funds we raise on May 5 during the Big Give S.A. will go to our i play! afterschool program.

Sponsor Profile: Frost

Frost has been a generous supporter of San Antonio Sports for years. In addition to an annual corporate gift, Frost supports our GoKids ChallengeTM, San Antonio Sports Charity Golf Classic, Fit Family Challenge, San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute and Pull for Kids. Their volunteer corps is a huge help during many of our events, including our San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute. Frost's support helps San Antonio Sports transform our community through the power of sport.

Donor Profile: Robert Ober & Associates

Two years ago, Robert Ober heard his friend Russ Bookbinder make a presentation to a group of civic leaders. He learned what San Antonio Sports was doing in our community and believed it was something he should support. Since that time, Robert and his company, Robert Ober & Associates, has become involved at almost every level. In addition to serving on the board of directors and on two committees, they field a team in the San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup and at Pull for Kids. Robert has purchased tables at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute, and was the first business to underwrite a pool for VIVA SWIM For Life so that free swimming lessons could be offered this summer. Robert's mantra is "To whom much has been given, much is expected." We are grateful for his generosity and support which is making a difference in our community.
