News from SpiritHorse Therapeutic Center
Spirithorse Therapeutic Center

March, 2015

A Word with Mr. Charles

The Beginning of My Mission

"The Chaplain at Denton State School made an appeal at our church for volunteers to greet and sit with the school residents that were members of our church. I was very interested in doing so, but I was uncomfortable around people with disabilities. Do you squat down to talk with them in their wheelchairs? Do you laugh when they say something or do something amusing?

I asked the Lord to make me comfortable around them so that I could volunteer to help them. He may have overdone it because he instead, taught me to love them.

Years later after volunteering at a typical therapeutic riding center for five years, I founded SpiritHorse because I thought that more could be offered than the "recreation product" offered by the centers worldwide. I founded a center that developed a product based upon scientific evidence that I called "Equine Assisted Healthcare", which has been so much more effective in dealing with the needs of those with disabilities."

Newsworthy Notes
 IKEA, Corinth Council and more...

We're pleased to announce that IKEA Plano has selected SpiritHorse as a WINNER in the 5th Annual IKEA Life Improvement Challenge!  This makeover will help us create a space for SpiritHorse Ponies' feed and medicines that is functional, organized and well-designed thus creating a more efficient environment for staff, which would better serve our clients.  Thanks to everyone that voted for SpiritHorse!  We will share more information soon.

On March 5th, 2015 the Corinth City Council voted to remove the road affecting SpiritHorse ranch from the Corinth Comprehensive Master Plan. They also approved the Terrace Oaks development change from SF2 to SF4 on the condition that the areas aligning with the SpiritHorse property have an 8 foot board-on-board fence.

SpiritHorse is grateful to everyone who showed their support at City hall! Click the link for more information.  Star Local Media Coverage

News from the Grants Department:

Did you know that SpiritHorse receives over 65% of its funding from Foundation Grants? We are blessed to have the wonderful support of the Harold Simmons Foundation, the Amon G. Carter Foundation, the Good Start Foundation and many more

Our Grants Department works hard to make sure SpiritHorse's funding is consistent and timely, so that we can move applicants into active Equine Therapy as soon as possible. We believe that early intervention is the key to improving the lives those with Special Needs. In 2014 we moved 109 applicants off of the waitlist and onto a SpiritHorse Pony!   -Jamie Barnhart and Jennifer Mathis
