Taking the Plunge for Life

Did you know that approximately 10 people drown every day in the U.S.? Or that 70% of African-American and 60% of Hispanic/Latino children cannot swim? More than one in five fatal drowning victims are children younger than 14.

Many of you know that San Antonio is hosting four major swimming events in 2015, including the Phillips 66 National Championships and the Speedo Jr. National Championships. To celebrate the sport of swimming, while also reducing the number of children who don’t know how to swim, San Antonio Sports is creating a legacy that lives far beyond the summer of 2015 with VIVA SWIM For Life presented by University Health System in conjunction with USA Swimming. The goal of VIVA SWIM is to increase the number of children who learn to swim, especially minorities, by increasing access to swimming pools and lessons. We have built an area-wide coalition of providers and stakeholders that will help make this happen.

This program will cast a net far and wide, and we truly believe it will make a difference in San Antonio children’s lives. In addition to providing them access to swimming pools and lessons, we will encourage youth to consider swimming as a lifetime sport through their school years and beyond.
