A Home Built for Women by Women
Houston Habitat for Humanity

December, 2014

Eight months in the making… Marilyn DeBlaw is seeing the fruits of her labor. On Saturday, May 3, 2014, Marilyn and over 25 friends, family and women volunteers set out on a journey that will change the course of her and her daughters’ lives. “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for my children,” she said in a letter to Houston Habitat; asking for the chance to earn a home in the program. Having a home of her own she can count on will help stabilize the health and well-being for her and her daughters.  A 15-year veteran school bus driver for Houston ISD and Galena Park ISD, Marilyn enjoys being a role model and mentor for the children she sees every day on her route. This week, the Women Build home will be dedicated to the DeBlaw Partner Family in celebration of her hard work and perseverance.

Several teams participated in the 2014 Women Build to make this possible. Their time, donations and volunteer efforts were invaluable in making this home affordable for the DeBlaw family. Without the help of these fearless women, it would not have been possible:

Vaco Resources Women Build Team

H-E-B Women Build Team

Sherwin Williams Paint Company (Houston District Womens Group)

Women Working Wonders Women Build Team

Hoover Slovacek Women Build team

GE Women Volunteers

We give them our heartfelt appreciation for a job well done!

The next Houston Habitat Women Build is scheduled for April 30th – May 9th, 2015.

Houston Habitat for Humanity, with thousands of sponsors and volunteers, has built over 950 homes for hard-working, low-income Houstonians.  Habitat Partner Families contribute 300 hours of “sweat equity” and complete training on home ownership to purchase homes at cost with zero-interest mortgages.
