The Road to San Antonio

After more than a year of planning, meetings, facility diagrams, renderings, bid books, presentations and a site visit, San Antonio’s road to the Final Four® goes through Indianapolis next week when members of our bid committee travel to the NCAA® headquarters for a final presentation to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.  Seven other cities, which include Atlanta, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, New Orleans, North Texas, Phoenix/Glendale, and St. Louis are also still in the hunt, vying to host a Men’s Final Four during the 2017 – 2020 bid cycle.

San Antonio’s bid team includes key members of our staff, UTSA, the Convention & Visitors Bureau, Alamodome and the City’s Convention Facilities Department.  The final pitch has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 12 with an announcement date of November 14.

The last time San Antonio bid on the championship in 2008, we were coming off hosting one of the most successful Final Fours to date. We hosted the Championship three times in 10 years, but we’ve learned that there is so much more to hosting and to the bidding process than just selling the destination. I can say with confidence we’ve left no stone unturned.  The City has done an outstanding job in developing a plan to make the necessary improvements to the Alamodome and ensuring that the improvements will be done and completed on time if our bid is successful.

NCAA fans love coming to San Antonio for this marquee event and our city has the perfect setup and footprint for all the Final Four has to offer.  San Antonio is a city “on the rise” and one that will have a new convention center, a new civic park and a renovated Alamodome to showcase one of the nation's premier sports event.

Hats off to everyone who has worked hard to get us to this point – from our city leadership, to our hotel and tourism industry partners and to all of you who participated in our “Bring It!” pep rally.

Adaptive Sports Help Change Lives

On September 26, 2001, Edward Afanador’s life changed forever. While responding at the World Trade Center’s second tower during the aftermath of 9/11, Edward suffered an inhalation injury when his breathing apparatus failed. These respiratory injuries resulted in disabilities that affect his everyday life, but adaptive sports have become an integral, life-saving part of his rehabilitation.

Edward was one of 140 athletes participating in the 2014 Valor Games Southwest, supported by World Car and hosted by San Antonio Sports in September.. He traveled from his home in New Jersey to compete along with the many other wounded warriors. (READ MORE)
