Children AT RISK Newsletter
Children at Risk

September, 2014

The future of our organization and of the children across Texas are brighter this fall due to the wonderful work of CHILDREN AT RISK. I am excited to join the team as Managing Director of North Texas, and eager to spread the word about the many ways to get involved in our program areas.

Looking forward, we are excited to learn from experts on emerging issues and solutions to end human trafficking, please join us for our 6th Annual Texas Human Trafficking Summit on Oct. 21. Our diverse group of speakers and attendees will discuss ideas to #stoptexastrafficking, covering topics such as safe harbor, demand abolition, legislative recommendations, and innovations in prevention, protection, and services.

On the education front, this month we will publish “The State of Pre-K: Realities and Opportunities in Texas,” a report for communities, school districts, and policy makers that will outline the current state of pre-kindergarten in Texas and include recommendations for the 84th Legislative Session. With support from The Meadows Foundation and the Texas Education Grantmakers Advocacy Consortium (TEGAC), C@R has conducted an assessment of access to pre-kindergarten education in Texas and challenges school districts face in providing pre-kindergarten programs. On September 30, with support from The Dallas Foundation, our sold out Go BIG for Pre-K event will launch our campaign to raise awareness about prekindergarten with the release of the findings from our statewide study.

I look forward to getting to know you and hope you will be in touch with any questions, concerns or ideas for how we can be a better advocate for Texas children.

My very best,

Ron Sylvan
Managing Director, North Texas

What's New This Month

  • We’d love for you to join us on Oct. 9 for an evening of Breakfast for Dinner, with delicious dining, cocktails, and an incredible mission as we continue to give hope to children all across North Texas.
  • We’d like to thank the 32 incredible donors and the Communities Foundation of Texas who supported us for North Texas Giving Day!
  • CHILDREN AT RISK is excited to announce that both the North Texas and Houston offices have joined Demand Abolition’s locality initiatives project. We are two of six cities challenged to reduce the demand for commercial sex by 20% in two years in key cities across the U.S.
