A Spotlight on Fort Worth
Children At Risk

June, 2014

Dear Jackie ,

We are so excited to announce that, with the support of the Dean Foods Foundation and Walmart Foundation, we have reached our goal of ensuring that more than 20,000 students, who were eligible for the free or reduced price breakfast program but not receiving it, will be starting their days full and ready to learn next school year! We would like to thank all of the school districts, principals, organizations, and nutrition directors who have worked so hard to make this possible. A couple of area school districts you may recognize are DeSoto ISD and Trinity Basin Prep!

To find some of the materials we used to educate districts on Universal School Breakfast, help stakeholders collaborate around best practices for implementation, and more, please visit our food insecurity resource page.

All my best,

Jaime Hanks Meyers
Managing Director, North Texas

2) Our 5th Annual Children’s Summit will be on June 26th from 9 AM – 2 PM at the Scottish Rite Hospital and will look at issues facing the whole child and how we can work together to eliminate them! Some of the topics that will be included are: toxic stress and its effects on children, victim centered approaches to trafficking interventions, the latest data on Dallas county kids, and making expanded pre-k work at the district level!

3) A huge thank you to everyone who braved almost tornadoes and flooding rain to make it to our Wonders of Childhood fundraising event on May 8th! The event raised over $10,000 and will help ensure that our work in North Texas continues to grow! Keep an eye out for fun pictures on our Facebook page in weeks to come.

4) This month, we said “goodbye” to our awesome spring semester interns, Ashley Teague and Tina Vu. We couldn’t have had such a successful program without support from the DAYL Foundation, and will miss Ashley and Tina in our office! We would like to welcome summer interns, Jawad Ahmed, Josie Gutilla, and Lindsay Gary, to our team! They will be providing invaluable assistance in the areas of public policy, food insecurity, and public education.

5) We are still hiring for two positions: Assistant Director and Operations Coordinator
