Children at Risk Newsletter
Children At Risk

April, 2014

Did you know that March was National Nutrition Month? Momma always said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and, when it comes to nutrition and overall ability to perform, we couldn’t agree more! To help get the word out, we held a School Breakfast Luncheon in San Antonio! Our expert speakers, including Senator Lucio, Councilwoman Taylor, Voices for Children of San Antonio, and school district representatives, explained the new Universal School Breakfast legislation, gave examples of how school districts can implement the program, and pointed out how this program is a step in the right direction toward ending food insecurity among Texas’ children.

Looking forward to this month, we are excited about the release of our 9th annual State School Rankings! The North Texas School Rankings will be released in partnership with local news outlets on April 27th and across the state in the following days. This year’s rankings will include a growth index, allowing us to better incorporate the improvements made by schools over time when ranking them. This year, we will also complete a ranking based on science and math indicators for Texas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana. Stay tuned for more details around our methodology and release!

All my best,

Jaime Hanks Meyers
Managing Director, North Texas
