CPMF Supporter Basil Scaljon Retires

You know that we typically only cover things of music when we put together our seasonal eNotes. But, CPMF is also about all things Art . . . when it is connected to CPMF in some way.
We couldn't let the chance go by without announcing the retirement -- after over 3 decades committed to the exquisite art form of handcrafted rugs -- of Basil Scaljon as he closes his shop on Main Street at the end of this coming week.
Basil has hosted intimate Cactus Pear Soirées at his rug gallery and the musicians have just loved making music surrounded by his beautiful rugs and carpets. It is like going back in time to a Duke or Prince's chamber to perform in such an artistically colorful setting. And we couldn't have been more pleased to provide that kind of out-of-the-ordinary experience for our "house concert" attendees.
"I've dedicated my life to this wonderful art form and, after 35 years, am retiring and closing my gallery. My hope is to find perfect homes for the remaining beautiful carpets and rugs that

are waiting to inspire just that right person who appreciates their beauty and art. I want people to leave knowing they now have a work of art in their home."

Basil looks forward to this last week of business before he devotes his energy to family and travel. On this Wednesday and Thursday, March 26 & 27, his shop at 2420 Main Street is open for Preview days. On Saturday and Sunday, March 29 & 30, Noon to 4pm, Basil will be conducting a final AUCTION to send his "beauties" out into the world to be loved and appreciated for the WORKS OF ART these carpets and rugs are.

We wish Basil the best and thank him for his support.

Go check out Basil's shop this coming week and weekend. You just might be the proud owner of an exquisite addition to your home!

A CPMF Spring Soirée Concert:
Bach & Beyond with
Christina Scott Edelen & Stephanie Sant'Ambrogio
Friday, April 25, 7 pm at Steinway Piano Gallery

We are pleased to welcome Christina, a CPMF and San Antonio favorite, who is traveling in from Amsterdam and her concertizing in Europe to play this special Soirée Special Concert with Stephanie. They have prepared an elegant program of music spanning 300 years by composers from Germany, Italy, France, Russia and America. Baroque and 20th century violin and harpsichord gems are juxtaposed to bring out the beauty and richness of each. We'll have a chance to satisfy your other senses with delicious appetizers and heavenly wines.

Repertoire includes wonderful pieces by the baroque masters Bach, Leclair and Scarlatti. The twentieth century shines with works by Harrison, Hovhaness and Schnittke. Don't miss "Bach & Beyond" and the special collaboration of Christina and Stephanie as they perform this exquisite program.

Please join us for a wonderful evening of great music, a buffet of hearty appetizers and delicious desserts . . . with fine wine and conversation to add to the delight of the evening.

Don't miss this Spring Soirée-in the intimate space and clear acoustics of the Steinway Piano Gallery, and enjoy a soul-satisfying evening of music, food, friends and support for Cactus Pear Music Festival.

Sleuth Stephanie Nails her Prey
Artistic Director Sant'Ambrogio loves to share at least a few rare &/or unpublished works with her audiences each season. She fell in love with a violin & piano work composed in 1921 by Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov, but discovered that it was out of print and no copies were available through interlibrary loan. She googled the violinist on the recording, sent him an email and he promised to scan the score for her. Unfortunately, violinist Svetlin Roussev had just moved into a new apartment in Paris and couldn't locate the parts. After seven long months, just as Steph was sending the other music out to her Artists and wondering if she should reprogram the concert, the document arrived via email. Op. 12 will be performed by Bulgarian violinist Bella Hristova in July!! "Vladigerov's Four Pieces are sublime and I can't wait to hear Bella & Lo-An Lin's performances of these gems," enthuses Stephanie.
Any contribution, large or small, is greatly appreciated and helps to further our musical mission in San Antonio and the region. Thank you.
