It Just Makes Good Business Sense

Are you part of a company that is embracing wellness programs because they help the bottom line and you know their value? Understand the significance and importance of team-building? You can engage in both on one Saturday morning by participating in the San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup presented by H-E-B. It is a great opportunity for local businesses to reward their employees' healthy efforts, bond outside of the office while wearing shorts, network with other businesses AND have fun. Raba Kistner's Vice President, Joe Irizarry, sums up the value for his company:

Raba Kistner initially joined the Corporate Cup to promote team building and a healthy lifestyle. In the two years we've participated, we have gotten considerably more out of the experience. The fun we had at the initial event helped us recruit more of our employees in the second year. This also has turned into a terrific networking event for us since many of our clients and business associates also participate. Participating organizations include a "who's who" of local businesses and institutions. Why wouldn't a local organization want to be a part of that?

Last year this event had 56 teams and over 4,000 participants . This year we will cap team entries at 70 based on space. So don't delay. Mark your calendars for May 31 at the University of the Incarnate Word and register your team today. Click here for details

Spurs Forward and Assistant Coach Visit Spurs Youth Basketball Clinic
San Antonio Spurs forward and 2013-14 Spurs Youth Basketball League Honorary Commissioner Kawhi Leonard joined assistant coach Jim Boylen to teach area youth the importance of making good decisions, staying in school and a few basketball fundamentals at the Spurs Youth Basketball League Kids Clinic at the Westside YMCA.

Founded in 1991, this non-school league is presented by Pizza Hut and Valero, funded through Silver & Black Give Back, and managed by San Antonio Sports. The Spurs Youth Basketball League strives to offer young people the opportunity to play basketball, improve their athletic skills, as well as learn the importance of teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship and discipline in a drug-free and safe environment.

Two more clinics will be held on March 17 at the Ramirez Community Center and March 25 at Antioch Gym.

Has the Tide Turned?
We thought it was great news last week when it was reported in the New York Times and elsewhere that the obesity rate for young children plummeted 43% in the last decade. When San Antonio Sports started the Go!Kids ChallengeTM in 2003, there wasn't much programming in our community providing incentives to kids to get moving and combat childhood obesity. Since that time, our programs have focused on things that are making a difference as sited in the article:

• Children now consume fewer calories from surgery beverages than they did in 1999;
• A combination of state, local and federal policies aimed at reducing obesity is starting to make a difference, and San Antonio Sports is part of and supports our local initiatives.
• Our programs are educating parents and families about healthy lifestyles, which may be having an effect.

We will continue with our initiatives -- Kids Rock, the Corner Store Go!Kids ChallengTM, Fit Family Challenge, presented by Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and i play! afterschool -- that are aimed at reducing childhood obesity. We look forward to seeing this promising trend continue.
