San Antonio Sports: What a Week!
San Antonio Sports

October, 2013

This has been a big week for San Antonio Sports! We want to share three significant event announcements. Thank you for your interest and support as we continue to fulfill our mission to transform our community through the power of sport.

San Antonio to Host Major Swimming Events in 2015
San Antonio has been awarded three prestigious national swimming championships. USA Swimming has awarded two of the sports top domestic meets, the Phillips 66 National Championships and the Speedo Jr. National Championships, to the Alamo City. US Masters Swimming, the governing body for adult swimmers, awarded San Antonio its U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championship in August. Each of the events will be held at the Northside Swim Center in 2015.

The Phillip's 66 National Championship is slated for Aug. 4-8, 2013 and is a key meet in preparation for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. The 2015 Speedo Jr. National Championships, which will feature the nation's top up-and-coming swimmers, is scheduled for Aug. 10-14. The U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championship attracts 1,800-2,000 participants and will be held earlier that year, April 24-27, 2015. The economic impact of the two USA Swimming events is expected to be $4 million. The Master's competition is anticipated to generate close to $1 million.

The San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 Announced
The San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame has announced the Class of 2014: Artis Gilmore, one of the great big men in NBA/ABA history and a fixture at center for the Spurs for five seasons; Stan Albeck, former head coach of the San Antonio Spurs from 1980-83; Joseph R. Straus, Sr., an original investor in the San Antonio Spurs and a pioneer in Texas horse racing; and the 2009 McAllister Park Little League All-Stars, the first team (12-13) from San Antonio to make it to the Little League World Series. They will be recognized at the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute on Saturday, February 1, 2014 in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

The black-tie gala will be different from years past. It will be in a new venue --Ballroom C of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center -- and feature musical entertainment from the Grammy award-winning Commodores ("Night Shift," "Brick House"). Proceeds from the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute benefit San Antonio Sports' kids programs. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit

Local All Star Football Game to Follow U.S. Army All-American Bowl
The San Antonio Sports All Star Football Game, presented by H-E-B, will showcase top local high school players in a game immediately following the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 in the Alamodome. The 35-year old battle of East vs. West, previously known as the San Antonio High School All-Star Football Game, will be held on a new date and in a new venue, providing an additional chance for local players to impress college scouts before National Signing Day. The area's top players will take the field at 5 p.m. after the best in the country kick-off at 12 p.m.

Tickets are being offered as a combination ticket, with attendees having access to both the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and the San Antonio Sports All Star Football Game presented by H-E B. Tickets will be available beginning Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Alamodome Box Office and through for $13 (general admission) and $26 (reserved).

The San Antonio High School All Star Football Game was previously staged by Kids Sports Network, which was acquired by San Antonio Sports in June. It was held in the spring at a high school stadium and served as the final game of the players' high school careers. Now the San Antonio Sports All Star Football Game, presented by H-E-B, will provide visibility for participants in front of college scouts with potential scholarship offers. Game day will be one of the best lineups of high school football showcase events anywhere in the country.
