The Transformational Power of Sport
This past weekend marked the beginning of another football season and many of us experienced the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat"! The overwhelming power that sports have to unite many diverse groups and communities is an amazing phenomenon. Two weeks ago, I witnessed the transformational power of sport on a much different level. San Antonio Sports partners with Sea World each year in a three-day event titled All Can Ski that attracts volunteers from all over the community – including many from local police and fire departments – who donate their time and services to make water skiing a reality for adults and children with physical disabilities.

At the event, I met a joyful young lady named Madeleine who was preparing to ski with two Sea World ski team members. As we visited, I was moved by her pure excitement to compete and excel despite the fact that she only had the use of one leg. She told me that sports motivate her to continue to set goals, work hard and exceed expectations. I asked her what were some of her goals and her answer only strengthened my belief that participating in sports can make a difference in the lives of our youth – "I worked hard and made the (able-body) swim team at Reagan High School!", she said with an ear-to-ear smile.

Madeleine has experienced the true "thrill of victory" without winning a race and she will achieve great things in the future because she understands that adversity can be overcome by hard work and a winning attitude. Way to go, Maddy!

New Name for Golf Classic
Be a part of the excitement of the 2013 San Antonio Sports Charity Golf Classic presented by H-E-B, on Monday, October 7 at The Dominion Country Club. At the tournament we will announce the Class of 2014 who will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame on February 1.

This year's golf tournament includes two flights – the morning Hall of Fame flight and the afternoon Matt Bonner & Friends flight. In the time between the two flights, the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 will be introduced at a press conference. Several celebrity guests and members of the Sports Hall of Fame will also play in the tournament.

Another great addition this year is the "ultimate goody bag". Participating team members will receive a $50 or $100 gift card redeemable for merchandise from the onsite TaylorMade/Adidas mobile pro shop. Valor Games Southwest Comes to San Antonio
The transformational power of sport will be visible when San Antonio Sports hosts the Valor Games Southwest presented by Valero, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee. The games will be held Sept. 23-25 for veterans and active duty service members with a physical disability. San Antonio is among four cities selected to host the games.

The Valor Games Southwestpresented by Valero will offer competition in air guns, 3v3 wheelchair basketball, archery, cycling, kayaking and power lifting. Events will be held at Mission Concepción Sports Park, SeaWorld San Antonio and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

The competition is about much more than just athletics. "A lot of people who have injuries have self-confidence problems," says Ross Davis, event manager and Paralympian. "They don't know what they can do. Sports gives them confidence that they can succeed in other areas of their life." This is an introductory event to get veterans into sports. Participants will receive free lodging and transportation, as well as equipment for those competing without their own.

To learn more or to volunteer,

The Valor Games Southwest presented by Valero, is also sponsored by Time Warner Cable and the USAA Foundation.
