Local Charities and Schools receive $1.6M from Valero Texas Open

September, 2013

Valero Texas Open is pleased to announce that $1.6M has recently been distributed to over 130 local charities and schools through two of its primary fundraising initiatives: Birdies for Charity® and Chip In for Schools.

Birdies for Charity provides nonprofit organizations with an unique and engaging platform from which to solicit pledges for every birdie made during Valero Texas Open tournament week; keeping 100% of the funds raised. Through the collective efforts of over 110 charities, Birdies for Charity raised nearly $1.4M.

Chip In for Schools provides individual student groups, sports teams, classes, etc. from across San Antonio’s schools with Valero Texas Open tickets to sell at a discounted price and allowing them to keep all proceeds.  This year, the growing program raised just shy of $40,000 through the hard work of 24 school groups.

Based on performances of participating schools and charities they were awarded an additional $164,000 combined, through incentive dollars funded by the Valero Texas Open to further their philanthropic and civic missions.

The funds raised through Birdies for Charity and Chip In for Schools contribute to the overall total of charitable funds raised through the Valero Texas Open and the Valero Benefit for Children Golf Classic, which raised $10 million in 2013, topping its previous high-water mark of $9 million in 2011 and 2012.

The next edition of the Valero Texas Open will take place March 24-30, 2014 at TPC San Antonio.

The Valero Texas Open is the 6th oldest professional tournament in golf world-wide, the 3rd oldest on the PGA TOUR and the longest held in the same city; making San Antonio the oldest host city on TOUR. In 2012, the tournament celebrated its 90th anniversary. Eight different golf courses in San Antonio have hosted the Texas Open; including Ft. Sam Houston, which is the only military base golf course to host a PGA TOUR event. Since 2010, the event has been contested at the AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio.

It’s list of champions includes some of the greatest names in golf history: Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Jack Burke, Jr., Arnold Palmer, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin, Lee Trevino, Corey Pavin, Mark O’Meara, Nick Price, Justin Leonard, Zach Johnson and Adam Scott, to name a few.

Since Valero became title sponsor in 2002, the tournament has become the annual leader in charitable fundraising among PGA TOUR events. The 2013 Valero Texas Open -- won by Martin Laird -- together with Benefit for Children Golf Classic, contributed $10 million to local and regional charities. In the 12 years Valero has been the tournament’s title sponsor; more than $81.5 million has been donated to charity.
