NCAA Championship City

Home Grown Events a Key Source for Sustainability
During this time of year, our team is focused on NCAA bids for major championships and planning for next year's youth programs and special events. San Antonio Sports has long been recognized as one of the leading sports commissions in the country and we continue to work hard to secure major events for San Antonio. But our future depends on our ability to create and execute unique and sustainable events that capture the attention of our community and provide funding to move the needle in developing a healthier community.

A great example of a "signature" event is the Corporate Cup presented by H-E-B.Jenny Carnes, a longtime SAS team leader, developed a program to engage businesses of all sizes in a fun competition that promotes physical activity and team building. This second-year event attracted 56 companies and over 4,000 participants and is fast becoming one of our major fundraisers. We are all thinking about how to maximize our existing events and be creative in developing new ways to educate and engage potential supporters of San Antonio Sports. Look for exciting news regarding our Hall of Fame Golf Tournament (see story below), Hall of Fame Tribute gala and the San Antonio High School All-Star Football Game.

If you are reading this, you are connected to San Antonio Sports and we want you to share your ideas with us. We are always open to looking at new events and programs that help us grow our ability to better serve the youth and families of San Antonio.

Bexar County Games
Three of the four competitions—track & field, soccer and swimming—are over in the inaugural Bexar County Games presented by Ancira. More than 1,400 kids took to the track, the fields and pool at three new venues. The swimmers were the very first to compete in the Northside Swim Center. The games wrap up in November with a basketball tournament at Mission Concepción Sports Complex.

The Bexar County Games, presented by Ancira, are designed to offer affordable access to sport competitions while showcasing the new amateur sports facilities funded by $80 million approved by voters in the Bexar County 2008 venue tax extension. The games provide an affordable way for local youth to participate in athletic competitions and to qualify for the TAAF State Games of Texas when eligible.

Fit Family Challenge
Hundreds came out to O.P. Schnabel Park on Saturday, July 20, to participate in theFit Family Challenge District 7 Summer Sports Day. The Summer Sports Day also served as the signature event for Fit Pass SA's inaugural summer season. Fit Pass SA has teamed up with the San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge to promote free and low cost wellness opportunities across the city. Fit Pass SA is an interactive fitness scavenger hunt where residents can earn points to win great prizes by attending events.

At the Summer Sports Day, parents, children and seniors enjoyed a rock climbing wall, soccer clinic and demonstrations with the Soccer Factory, Zumba and nature hikes. We also had the third winner of a Fit Family Challenge $1,000 grand prize—Thalia Menchaca. This is her fourth year participating in the Fit Family Challenge. "We just wanted to continue staying active and spending time together, so it is great to be rewarded for just being together," Thalia said.

By this fall, three more will be completed at Passmore, Villarreal, and Boone Elementary Schools.

SPARK is a school park program that turns public elementary and middle school property into neighborhood parks to be enjoyed by the community outside of school hours. SPARK brings together the resources of government, school districts, the private sector, colleges and universities, neighborhood groups, PTA's and concerned citizens to make San Antonio a healthier place, giving residents a convenient, safe place to play and exercise.
