Children at Risk July Newsletter
Children At Risk

August, 2013

Summer time is always full of exciting events, trips, and get-togethers and we want to keep that ball rolling. July offered us many new opportunities for expanding our programs to better serve the kids of Texas and raise awareness around the issues we focus on. We are excited to announce that we will be the beneficiaries of the first ever Creatures for Kids Live Auction, featured at the 4thannual Vinyl Thoughts Art Show on September 12th! This show always brings a fun crowd and will be a great opportunity for the C@R team to be out in the community. We have also finalized the details for our fall fundraiser, Take the Mic. Mr. Randall Goss will be hosting us at his home on October 3rdwhere guests will learn more about what it means to take the microphone and be a voice for kids, as well as recognize a local advocate who has used their platform to bring the needs of children to the forefront.Space will be limited so reserve your spot today!

We hope that you will save the date for both of these events because we would love to take this opportunity to get to know you better. If you would like additional information about either event, please email Amanda

1) Thank you Dean Foods Foundation and Walmart Foundation! Recognizing the importance of a nutritious meal to start every school day, the Dean Foods Foundation and Walmart Foundation have pledged $150,000, to expand our food in schools initiative across the state. To learn more about the school breakfast program, see our School Breakfast Programs In North Texas and Across the State Report.

2) We would also like to thank the Rainwater Charitable Foundation for their recent donation of $250,000, funding the next step in expanding our School Rankings. Thanks to Rainwater, we will now be able to provide parents with a toolkit full of helpful information they can use to place their child in a higher performing school, advocate for improvements in their current school, or learn more about what indicators typically define a good school.  To lead this work, we are excited to welcome Jessica Noel to the team!

3) Welcome Liliana Esposito to our North Texas Advisory Board! Liliana serves as the Vice President, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for Dean Foods, the nation’s leading dairy company, and the President of the Dean Foods Foundation. C@R is very excited to have her on board!

4) Congratulations to our intern, Andrea Karch, who was recently published in The Dicta, the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers monthly newsletter. Andrea’s article discusses the impacts of Texas having a high juvenile incarceration rate, as well as the possible solution that specialty courts offer. “Today, Texas incarcerates more individuals than any other state in the country, second only to California. Texas also has the second highest number of juveniles in detention facilities.” Find the rest of her article on the last page at
