The Kids In Need Foundation Announces 2013 Teacher Grants Program
Kids In Need Foundation

July, 2013

The Kids In Need Foundation, a national, non-profit organization dedicated to providing free school supplies to economically disadvantaged school children and under-funded teachers, is launching the 2013 teacher grants program, marking the sixteenth year these grants have been available. Beginning July 15, teachers nationwide can visit the Kids In Need Foundation website at to apply for grants ranging from $100 to $500 to conduct classroom projects. This year, for the very first time, pre-K teachers can apply for funding through this program. Pre-K teachers must use the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores application.

Regional grant sponsors are Fred Meyer Fund for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska and Via Credit Union for Marion, Indiana, and surrounding areas.  Fred Meyer has been a teacher grants sponsor since the program began in 1997.

Two of the Teacher Grants sponsors, Office Depot/Office Depot Foundation and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, offer teacher loyalty programs that provide benefits to teachers.  All teachers are encouraged to enroll in these programs, but when applying for grants using these applications, teachers will be required to sign up for them.

Teachers enrolling in the Office Depot Rewards™ Star Teacher Program will receive up to 400 points just for signing up and completing their online member profiles. Additionally, members get points for shopping, connecting, and recycling. For every 1,000 points earned, an Office Depot Rewards Certificate will be issued.  More details can be found at

The Jo-Ann Teacher Rewards Program offers a free discount card for 15 percent off every purchase from September 1 to August 31 (excluding remnants, patterns, gift cards, and previous purchases).  Teachers enrolling or re-enrolling in the program will receive a bonus coupon for 20 percent off any one total purchase. Teachers who are already enrolled in these loyalty programs, may, of course, complete the applications.

Applications will be available online at, beginning July 15.  The deadline for submission of grant applications is September 30. Grant awards are based on the creativity of the projects being proposed.

"Teacher grants allow educators to provide experiential learning opportunities in the classroom when there otherwise would not be the funds to do so," said Dave Smith, executive director of  Kids In Need.  "We believe that through our partnerships with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores,  Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation, Fred Meyer, and Via Credit Union, teachers will be able to engage students in the learning process.  These sponsors, together with Kids In Need, will provide teachers with the tools to strengthen creativity, critical thinking skills, and core knowledge among their students.  And this year, to reinforce the importance of early childhood education, we are very pleased to be able to include pre-K projects in our funding, thanks to Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores."

“At Jo-Ann, we value inspiration, and who's more inspiring than the teachers in our communities' classrooms? To give back to those teachers who inspire us, we are very excited to partner with the Kids In Need Foundation to expand our grant program to include pre-K projects and deserving early childhood educators,” said Margaret Skinner, director, corporate communications, for Jo-Ann.

“We are proud to continue our support for the Kids In Need Foundation’s teacher grants,” said Office Depot Foundation President Mary Wong.  “The Ready, Steady, GO!grants that we sponsor play a vitally important role in inspiring creativity in the classroom.  We’re grateful for the opportunity to assist teachers in bringing their innovative ideas to life.”
