NCAA Championship City

The Value of Credibility
Over the past few weeks, I have participated in meetings with the United States Olympic Committee regarding our Community Olympic Development Program, the NCAA to discuss the upcoming bids for Men's and Women's Final Four events, NCAA Division I Volleyball and Soccer Championships, and with USA Diving to discuss the 2016 USA Olympic Trials for Diving. We have some great opportunities to bring a number high profile events to San Antonio that will attract out-of-town visitors and national media exposure.

The common theme that I noticed at all of these meetings was the high degree of respect that these organizations have for San Antonio Sports and its long track record of success. This is a great testament to the relationships along with strong planning and execution that Susan Blackwood provided during her tenure leading our team. She and Bill Hanson developed what today is a very experienced staff that has earned the trust of the top organizations in amateur sports and a Board that has vision and the willingness to take calculated risk to bid on major events that provide tremendous economic impact for our city.

Your support of our goals to bring events that impact, develop healthy kids and provide places to play allows us to work on your behalf to accomplish great things for San Antonio. If you are currently a member of our team, thank you so much! If your membership has lapsed or you have not joined our team, will you consider lending your support to what we do every day? Click here to become part of our San Antonio Sports family and help us continue to bring great value to our city!

Nominate Your Local Sports Hero
Public nominations are being accepted through July 10 for the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. Nominees must have made an impact in the world of sports; either through outstanding athletic achievements or outstanding contributions to athletic programs, and have ties to San Antonio. The new class will be announced during a press conference in October and officially inducted during the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute in 2014.

The nomination form and a list of current nominees can be found If a person is already on the ballot, he or she does not need to be nominated again. To see a list of current members of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, visit

The San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame is a partnership between San Antonio Sports, the City of San Antonio, and San Antonio Express-News. The first class was inducted in 1995. Proceeds from the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute benefit San Antonio Sports and our kids programs, which provide sports and fitness programs for thousands of local children.

Ancira Helps Kids Get in the Game

When you "Think Ancira," you think automobiles. We've all seen the commercials. But now, youth around the county make think something else; fun competitions at great venues. Ancira is the presenting sponsor for theBexar County Games, providing financial support for the youth sports competitions that are being offered this summer and fall. "Not only are youth sports a valuable way to keep our children healthy and in shape, but they offer invaluable life skills, such as teamwork, fairness and dedication as they learn value in themselves and others," says April Ancira, vice president, Ancira Enterprises. "I couldn't imagine a better way to build a stronger community."

Families are Getting Fit and Having Fun
Record-breaking South Texas heat didn't stop almost 1,000 people from participating in the third big event of the 2013 Fit Family Challenge.Councilman Ray Lopez and News 4 WOAI's Cleto Rodriguez welcomed families before they participated in the D6 Fitness 5K at Gustafson Stadium. In addition to the 5K, families could have fun doing human hamster ball races, laser tag and getting information at a fitness fair with representatives from the City of San Antonio.

The second winner of the $1,000 prize was also drawn.Dawn Guerrero and her "Fitness FUNactics" are participating this year for the first time. They started at Northside ISD but hit as many free fitness events as they can. The next big event will be a summer sports day on July 20 at O.P. Schnabel Park. Coca-Cola Foundation Supports i play! Afterschool Expansion
Mayor Julian Castro and the Coca-Cola Foundation announced $1.5 million in grants to get San Antonians moving. San Antonio Sports received funds to expand its i play! afterschool program. Our non-profit will also serve as the fiscal agent for two other programs that will be implemented by San Antonio Parks & Recreation to mobilize health and fitness resources in neighborhoods: Mobile Fit SA and Ride to Own. Through Mobile Fit SA, the grant will support the Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness program, military-style fitness classes taught by hired U.S. veterans. The grant also provides the San Antonio Food Bank with funds for their Mobile Food Market and Nutrition Education on the Move programs.

The grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation will help San Antonio take the next step toward reaching the SA2020health and fitness goals for which the Mayor's Fitness Council (MFC) is the lead partner. Through the MFC, residents, groups and organizations work collaboratively to achieve targeted health and fitness goals and it is the primary entity for the Mobilizing Health and Fitness Resources to Neighborhoods project.

SPARK Park Construction Underway
Three SPARK Parks have broken ground. Sky Harbour Elementary, Camelot Elementary and Neal Elementary will each have a new park to share with their neighbors this fall. SPARK is a school park program that turns public elementary and middle school property into neighborhood parks to be enjoyed by the community outside of school hours. Former City Councilman Reed Williams was essential in making this program a reality by providing City funds as seed money.

"Reed Williams reached across district lines to make the first three SPARK parks possible," said Susan Blackwood, executive director of San Antonio Sports. "His vision, guidance and confidence in San Antonio Sports have made this program possible. Hopefully future Council members will continue to find a way to fund this program as a legacy to Councilman Williams."

North East ISD Superintendent Brian Gottardy, San Antonio Sports Sr. Vice President Mary Ullmann Japhet, San Antonio Sports Executive Director Susan Blackwood, Former City Councilman Reed Williams (Dist. 8), City Councilwoman Ivy Taylor (Dist. 2), North East ISD Board of Trustees President Susan Galindo, San Antonio Sports Board Chairman George Block, and San Antonio Sports President & CEO Russ Bookbinder at the groundbreaking of the Camelot SPARK.
