Houston Metal Recycling Executive Honored for Industry Leadership
Gulf Coast Chapter of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI)

June, 2013

The Gulf Coast Chapter of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) recently announce Steven Segal as the recipient of this year’s Israel Proler Award.  Segal is a member of the Recycling Council of Texas and is the managing director of the J.L. Proler Iron & Steel Company in Houston.

First awarded in 1984, the Gulf Coast Chapter Proler Award is for outstanding contribution to the scrap recycling industry. In 1986, it was named in memory of Israel Proler.

“Congratulations to Steve on his well-deserved recognition as recipient of Gulf Coast Chapter’s 2013 Proler Award,” said Veronica Costanza, president of ISRI’s Gulf Coast Chapter. “We thank him for his leadership and contributions to our chapter, ISRI and our industry.  Steve has made and continues to make a difference!”

Steven Segal was born and raised in the scrap industry.  After college, he returned home to work in the family business, and now serves as managing director of JL Proler. In addition, he has fulfilled a number of leadership positions helping to shape and grow the industry. Segal served the Gulf Coast Chapter as President from 1991 to 1993, as well as president of the Houston Metal Processors & Recyclers Association. He was also a founding member of the Recycling Council of Texas. At the national level of ISRI, Segal served on several committees that included Environmental, Transportation, Membership, Convention and Finance.

“I’ve always been amazed how simply doing what one loves doing can be reward on its own,” Segal said. “There is no plaque, no testimonial, no material representation that comes close. To have spent these years in a career that is so gratifying, whether for my company or for the interests of our trade associations is more than most can claim. It is, however, with a most deep sense of honor and respect that I accept the Gulf Coast Chapter Israel Proler Award this year.”

The award was presented during the Gulf Coast Chapter Summer Convention and Exposition held in New Orleans, June 12-15.

RCOT President Tom Baker said Segal has played a strong role in helping to promote responsible recycling in Texas and beyond.

“Steven Segal is fully committed to working with his community and cares deeply about recycling that benefits Texans,” Baker said.
