Metrocare Meal for the Minds 2013 Calendar Advisory
Metrocare Services,

June, 2013

WHAT:                 The 2013 Meal for the Minds Luncheon

The Metrocare Auxiliary, a group of 145 volunteers, will host the luncheon, which includes the 6th annual Edible Auction featuring cakes from Dallas’ top pastry chefs. The luncheon also features a fourth annual art sale of work by Art Focus XC, an elite group of juried Dallas artists.

Pete Earley is the bestselling author of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize finalist book Crazy: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness. He has penned 13 books including the New York Times bestseller The Hot House. Earley has previous experience as a journalist for The Washington Post and wrote extensively about crime and punishment and society. When Earley’s life was forever changed by the events recounted in his book Crazy, he joined the National Alliance of Mental Illness to advocate for stronger mental health reform in America. He will be focusing his speech on how persons with mental illness are ending up behind bars when what they need is help, not punishment.

WHEN:     Wednesday, September 18, 2013

                 Edible Auction & Art Sale 11 a.m.

                 Lunch Program 11:45 a.m.

WHERE:   Belo Mansion

                 2101 Ross Ave.

                 Dallas, TX 75201

WHY:       The focus of this year’s luncheon is on the services Metrocare provides for clients with mental health challenges and how appropriate community supports are required for those individuals also involved in the criminal justice system. Metrocare works directly with the Dallas County court system and has a specialty forensic psychiatric unit that offers a full range of outpatient mental health services. Metrocare wants to remind the community that we can provide better support for individuals involved with the criminal justice system when systems like the courts and mental health providers work together. Although people with mental health issues are unique it does not mean they need to be locked up in iron gated facilities without treatment and care.
