Verdi Overture from Nabucco
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4
Sibelius Symphony No. 5

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth as we perform his dramatic Overture from Nabucco. Based on the Biblical story, Nabucco is one of Verdi’s most beloved and performed operas and helped established his career as an opera composer. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, the only work by Beethoven performed on this season’s Classics series is one of the composer’s most widely performed compositions. Premiered in 1807 with the composer at the keyboard, the second movement of the work is said to be a musical depiction of Orpheus taming the furies at the gates of Hades. Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5 was written in the early part of the twentieth century and features beautiful and powerful Finnish melodies in musical forms that expand the bounds of the traditional symphony.
