Less than $800 to go--please help us get there.

The Writer's Garret has received funds again to help disadvantaged youth lead fuller
lives. We've raised over $3000, but still need help with our match so that these
young people can stretch their imaginations and understanding of how better minds
can lead to a better world.

These two pilot projects are part of "Arts Respond" created by the Texas Commission
on the Arts. "Arts Respond" projects provide a uniquely creative solution to areas
of societal need. Our two projects in particular are designed to help young people
in public schools and community venues to experience creative reading and writing
programs comparable to those taught in the finest private schools.

In our EDUCATION /Mentoring pilot, college kids help high school students appreciate
the power of words; they, in turn, teach middle school kids the same (and so on).
Our other project focuses on sensitizing young people to the value of NATURAL RESOURCES
by emphasizing digital, recycled and "found" art; nature writing; and various "green"
ZINE  techniques for preserving ideas and creativity for posterity.

The full funding covers scholarships for over 30 homeless, orphaned, and runaway
youth; children in protective custody; and young people from economically distressed
homes. Funds pay instructors and cover supplies, program coordination, and project
overhead (e.g., training, background checks, insurance, venue, reporting requirements,
We welcome all support to help these young people benefit from what many of us took
for granted growing up: healthy social interaction; creative outlets for self-expression;
caring adults leading the way; appreciation for artistry, excellence, and craft;
strong attention to reading and writing skills; and a sense of civic and personal
responsibility. These Garret pilots "model" all of these, and more.
Please make a donation or call in a pledge to (214) 828-1715. You may also snail-mail
a check to The Writer's Garret, Box 234 c/o 11255 Garland Rd., Ste. 1302, Dallas,
TX 75218 (but please email or call to let us know that it is coming).
Thank you so very much!
