I joined Literacy Connexus . . .
Literacy Missions has been part of my life, my passion, my ministry, since the very first Sunday my husband and I were assigned as missionaries in New York City to an apartment complex containing 25,000 people in a single block. We learned Literacy Missions was one way to reach out to people who did not know us or our Savior.

  Engaging Teacher

A beautiful Japanese lady was present in that congregation of less than twenty and asked if I would be willing to teach her English. Of course I said, "Yes." But inwardly I thought "Oh no. What am I going to do?" Then I remembered the Literacy Missions workshop I had taken years ago at our Baptist Student Center in college. I told her to come Tuesday and she said, "I might bring a friend." I hurried back to the apartment, unpacked our boxes and met her--with 11 of her favorite friends--that first Tuesday morning. That class grew to four levels and one Bible Study.

For over 42 years, wherever we have lived, I have taught English as a second language and adult reading and writing; and for 12 summers in China, English as a foreign language.

Phyllis and Company

Currently, my husband and I are a part of the International Sunday school department at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco--a multigenerational (teenage to octogenarian) class of people from at least 25 countries. I also work with the church's 43 year-old Neighbors International Program which serves over 150 people from 31 countries.

THANK YOU Literacy Connexus for making the training, networking, and support possible for ministries such as this.
