Texans Care for Children

February, 2013

Will Texas Build a Better Future this Year?
Doing better by children is in all Texans' best interest. Members of our staff helped explain why on Sunday as part of an Agenda for Texas series from the Austin American-Statesman.
For state leaders to become more forward-thinking and child-focused, kids need empowered and effective advocates speaking out on their behalf. That's what we're here for, but guess what? That is also what you're here for. We achieve more working together, so Texans Care for Children is sharing tools to help you be an effective voice for children and for a bright Texas future. A new series on our blog has step-by-step tips for
setting up meetings with lawmakers
& other ways to advocate.
Our video explains why this year is a big one for Texas Medicaid.
Your presence at the Capitol on
March 5 can make a difference.
Come to March 5 Health Care Advocacy Day
On March 5, you're invited to join with Texans Care and our fellow partners in the Texas Well and Healthy Campaign here in Austin as we urge Texas lawmakers to make the right choices on health care for kids and families. We're calling for action to restore health services hurt by 2011's budget choices and to allow the Medicaid expansion—a health reform solution that would cover an estimated 1.4 million uninsured, low-income Texans. Buses are available from many areas. Please register now to join us March 5 for health care advocacy day.
Curbing childhood obesity at a new site:
Want to help raise awareness about what Texas can do to curb childhood obesity? You can help us push back against an industry that markets relentlessly to kids and is a threat to children's health. About 1 in every 3 Texas youth are drinking the equivalent of two pounds of sugar every week, and soda and other sugary drinks are to blame. We've launched a new website and need your help spreading the word: It's time to Drink Well, Texas!
Our campaign for healthier drinks has a new
home online.

At Capitol briefings last week, legislative staff learned about how to connect more kids, families, and mothers to health coverage they need.
