Holiday Hat Miracle From Southwest Key's Casa Houston

It all started with a comment in class from one of Paula Carrasco’s students, “Poverty does not exist in the United States of America.”

A teacher at Southwest Key’s Immigrant Youth Shelter in Houston, Texas, Carrasco, together with co-worker Dahlia Torres, turned a comment into a teaching opportunity. She coordinated her students to knit beanies or hats specifically to give to local homeless people.
And while the story of underprivileged youth learning to help the homeless is newsworthy enough, the amazing way that some of these beanies found heads to keep warm is nothing short of a holiday miracle...(Read more)

December 21, 2012 –Melissa W. Chen, Lead Clinician for Unaccompanied Minors Shelter Casa Pleasant Hill, California was awarded the 2012 Southwest Key Residential Program Employee of the Year.  
A consummate professional, Chen takes the time to stay abreast of new techniques and best practices as a clinician. She was instrumental in the Pleasant Hill Shelter adopting the sandplay therapy technique. Using a tray filled with sand and miniature objects, clients are able to visually represent experiences and trauma and communicate with their clinicians when verbalizing is difficult.

Southwest Key Programs is one of over 250 organizations that have joined the philanthropic Giving Library, an online database of  information about non-profits organized in easily digestible video formats.
Southwest Key El Presidente/CEO, Dr. Juan J. Sánchez speaks about the mission, effectiveness, success metrics, misconceptions, and future of Southwest Key Programs in 11 different videos on the site.
Released by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF) , the goal of the Giving Library was to create a tool to help people "give smart" by making informed and impactful decisions when giving. (Visit the Giving Library)


East Austin College Prep has been awarded the U.S. Department of Education Innovative Approaches to Literacy grant in the amount of $350,000 per year for 2 years, totaling $700,000.


The grant will be administered under the auspices of director Chloe Reynolds. Reynolds will head up a team of literacy coaches, a librarian, and a consultant, who will bring together the latest research to improve literacy skills.


In addition, Reynolds and her team will establish a mobile library to visit Austin neighborhoods. The mobile library will provide books, computer-aided searches, and counseling for parents and students on improving literacy skills. All services will be bilingual.  (Read more)
