Team Up Challenge kicks off

Twenty semi-finalists surprised with $2,500 check

The 2012-2013 Team Up Challenge got off to a great start as we hit the road to surprise the 20 semi-finalists with the Coyote, T-Bone, Silver Dancers, Ice Girls and the $2,500 check. Brackenridge High School's fitness club (SAISD) got an even bigger surprise when San Antonio Spur Nando de Colo personally delivered the good news that they had been selected as semi-finalists!

These students will work all season on projects combating such serious issues as hunger, obesity, graffiti, bullying, college readiness and more. In April, five student groups will receive $20,000 each for their work improving our community.

We have also selected the college students that will serve as Team Up Scholars. The Team Up Scholars, presented by AT&T, will serve as mentors to students in the Team Up Challenge and assist them as they make a run for the championship!

Community Solutions Program

Maria Piedrahita will spend four months stateside with SS&E

Spurs Sports & Entertainment is hosting a fellow from the Community Solutions Program, run by the State Department. Maria Piedrahita works for the Nutresa Foundation, based in Colombia, and works on education, nutrition, income generation and volunteer initiatives in their corporate social responsibility division.

"My passion is working with people, helping them with their needs and identifying their skills," Maria said.

She arrived in August and will spend another month and a half here in San Antonio, before returning to Colombia.  Maria was one of 61 fellows selected from more than 700 applicants for the program. She hopes to improve her leadership skills, expand her understanding of the world and find ways to build a network that can expand the betterment of the world.

Maria has already learned to two-step, and has visited both Chicago and Alaska to capitalize on her time here in the States.

Asked about her experiences, Maria said she's learned "the importance of belonging, that has lead you [United States] to build a strong country. People talk with so much pride about the U.S. The flag is everywhere, the anthem is playing in all kinds of events. People feel proud of living here."

Maria has used her experience in volunteer management to assist the Community Responsibility department at Spurs Sports & Entertainment, and has met with several business leaders and companies throughout San Antonio to talk about charitable efforts and share ideas.
