SWBC Delivers for Meals on Wheels

August, 2012

This week, SWBC began a pilot program of delivering Meals on Wheels to qualifying seniors in our communityEach weekday, a pair of SWBC employees will donate one lunch hour and deliver meals to homebound seniors living in close proximity to their offices.  This coordinated effort will not only help feed frail seniors living nearby, but will also provide opportunities for brief wellness checks and help combat loneliness amongst this very vulnerable segment of our community.

“We are extremely excited to have SWBC as our newest partner,” said CEO, Sharon Baughman.  “Senior hunger is a major issue in Bexar County and with such a high demand for our services, it is a blessing to have SWBC commit to our mission.”

“SWBC has spent a lot of time supporting the youth, and we feel it’s equally important to help the citizens who built our country and defended our freedom,” said Gary Dudley, SWBC President. “We commend Meals on Wheels on the great job they do, and we wanted to help support them.”

The addition of SWBC as a meal delivery partner will not only save the program nearly $7,000 in delivery costs, but will allow Meals on Wheels to add more seniors  who are in desperate need of the service.  “Delivering thousands of meals each weekday would be quite a challenge without the help of our volunteers,” adds Baughman.  “SWBC’s involvement couldn’t have come at a better time.”  SWBC will be the 22nd corporate partner to begin delivering meals on behalf of the program.

With the help of local partners, Meals on Wheels delivers over 890,000 meals each year to homebound seniors living in Bexar County.  Corporations, churches, and civic groups are all encouraged to learn more about becoming a meal delivery partner by calling Volunteer Services at (210) 735-5115 or by visiting the program’s website at
