About The Writer's Garret []

Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world."

Hamlet contemplated, "To be or not to be, that is the question."

So, there are many ways "to be..."

TO BE a Donor []
(make a cash donation and get in touch with your inner philanthropist)

TO BE a "Generous Communer" []

TO BE a Student []

But it took an

an American sportswear company to urge,

"Just DO it."

Our 4th of July membership drive has come and gone. Despite "giving fatigue" (fewer
than one half of 1% responded), I'm ready to put my own money on the line to support
The Writer's Garret.
I will do this because keeping The Writer's Garret alive really doesn't cost much
compared to what's gained from each dollar given. In the last year alone, we provided
37,516 hours of services to 1,921 adult learners (teachers, readers, writers) and15,450
hours of educational opportunities to children, youth, and under-served audiences.
This only accounts for our direct, "face-to-face" programs.
We also continue to reach--quite literally--tens of thousands through partnership-projects
such as student anthologies; the Writers Studio []
(with help from KERA and NPR affiliates); and on-line audio readings []
by abused teens who can't even use their real names for fear of being found.
Our website [],
Facebook sites, e-letters, pilot programs, and more reach upwards into the hundreds
of thousands. And we did that with only about 45% of the funds we had just two years
ago. But now, running on fumes has taken its toll.
That said, I  will personally give to the Jack Myers Fund $1 for every $10 donated,
up to $2,500 should we raise $25,000--our goal by the end of September. This is
the toughest spot we've ever been in--and we've seen some doozies. For those who
don't know, Jack Myers was our co-founder and my late husband, the former Poet Laureate
of Texas and SMU Professor (and Vermont College Field Faculty).
In a country, state, city as rich as ours, despite our economic woes, we ought to
be able to support books, language, education, reading, and writing. I'll go so
far as to argue that our freedom (of expression, of mind, of heart) and democratic
way of life utterly depend on our willingness to value these over our money. We
must value what is Ours rather than what is ours.
I know Jack felt that way. Many of you have no doubt that he would be calling, e-mailing,
or snail mailing you right now, if he could, and asking for your help. You know
he would. He'd make some clever remark with his thick Boston accent, and then, once
the laughter quieted down, he'd say, "Please, give something."
