 Message from the President

Dear Friends,

As summer brings sunny skies and leisure hours, many of our clients are setting new goals for their mental health and physical fitness—both key parts of a complete and holistic recovery from addiction. Whether rock climbing in New England, meditating in California, or practicing yoga in New York, our clients and community members alike are taking advantage of Phoenix House’s healthy offerings.

We also have much to celebrate with Father’s Day around the corner. Here at Phoenix House we’re so proud of the dads in our lives—especially those who have made a fresh start in recovery.

Of course, our clients’ success is due in no small part to dedicated friends like you. Here’s to their long-lasting health, and yours!

Warm regards

Howard Meitiner
President and CEO

    Reconnection, Recovery: East Hampton Yoga

At the Phoenix House East Hampton Outpatient ProgramDirector Annemarie Carangelo (a certified Sivananda Yoga instructor), leads clients in a special group in mindful awareness to aid in recovery and stress management with light stretching/free movement yoga. As past addictions take a physical toll on the body, mind, and spirit, practicing yoga is healing and transformative; our clients have felt positive results and have self-motivated to become healthier overall. Yoga has led the way for our clients to reconnect with their bodies, regain respect for themselves, and enhance their recovery regimens. To read more, click here.

       Meditation in California

For the past four years, clients at Phoenix House of Los Angeles have been meditating their way to better physical and mental health with the help of local volunteer yoga instructor, Angela Laner.  From one-on-one sessions to groups of ten or more, Ms. Laner enjoys regularly volunteering her time and skills to help Phoenix House residents on the path to healing. “Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline,” she says. Ms. Laner’s skills and efforts are appreciated by staff and clients alike. “Yoga is a way to merge my mind, body, and soul,” says one enthusiastic resident,  “For the first time, I am starting to feel complete.” To read more, click here.

  New Teen Fitness Studio

Women Helping Youth, a new community partner for Phoenix Houses of California, has generously approved a grant to establish the Women Helping Youth Fitness Studio at Phoenix House Academy of Los Angeles in Lake View Terrace, CA. The studio will serve more than 160 teenage girls each year who are struggling with histories of substances abuse and/or co-occurring mental health issues. The center will provide a safe space for these young women to deal with emotional and physical issues. Phoenix House is grateful and proud to welcome Women Helping Youth as a partner—together, we will continue to make a positive difference in the lives of at-risk girls in our community. Father's Day True Story Spotlight:

"I began experimenting with drugs and alcohol when I was 12, and by 17, I was using cocaine and smoking crack. Later, I enlisted in the Navy, and I was grateful to be given a fresh start. Unfortunately, my self-destructive habits soon returned; I began using crystal meth and getting into fights. I was eventually discharged because of my behavior. In 2008, I entered Phoenix House—the first place to give me the tools I needed to save my own life. Phoenix House taught me that sobriety is possible, and that no one is beyond saving. Today, I am a proud father in recovery, and I work as the Director of Maintenance for Phoenix House’s facility in Long Island, New York. For the first time, I feel like I am truly living, and am grateful to Phoenix House for giving me that second chance." To read more of Paul’s story, click here.
