 Message from the President

Dear Friends,

Much has changed over the past 45 years—at Phoenix House and beyond. We as an organization are always keeping up with the latest innovations and the most forward-thinking treatment practices, and we have come far since our humble beginnings in a lone Manhattan brownstone in 1967.

But some things never change. For example: our clients, staff members, and friends like you continue to inspire us on a daily basis with amazing personal transformations, superb dedication to our mission, and unwavering support of those in recovery. In this issue, we’re celebrating these remarkable individual accomplishments as well as our “team achievements” as a growing and thriving organization.

Please join me in wishing Phoenix House a happy 45th Anniversary!

Warm regards

Howard Meitiner
President and CEO

    Beyoncé Cosmetology
 Students Visit Neal Farinah

Recently, students and staff at the BeyoncéCosmetology Center had the opportunity to visit celebrity hairstylist Neal Farinah at his salon in Brooklyn, New York. After a tour of Neal’s new salon, our students observed his stylists at work, gaining insight into different hairstyles and learning new techniques. Education has proven to be a vital tool in recovery, and the trip was a tremendous opportunity for our students to learn from professionals and enhance their own vocational studies.

           Citra Center Hosts
         Phoenix House Idol

On March 27th, our Women’s Program at our Phoenix House Citra Center hosted Phoenix House Idol. Clients competed for an opportunity to record their original music through the Phoenix Rising Music Program, created by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriterKara DioGuardi. Two client judges critiqued each performance while the audience had the final say through voting.  This year’s winner was Tracy for her original song “Living Free.”

The California non-profit Families in Schools recently organized a reading competition for students in the Los Angeles area, and we are extremely pleased to announce that Diana, a young client at our Phoenix House Academy of Los Angeles has won the First Prize! The winners received a letter from Families in Schools and a gift card for the Million Words Challenge at the Los Angeles Festival of Books. “Our residents are capable of so many amazing things,” commented Tony Fratanonio, a Phoenix House Academy counselor. “We all congratulate Diana for her achievement.”

True Story:Jocelyn

I was already drinking and smoking weed by the time I was 14, and soon I was doing crystal meth. I stopped using drugs when I got pregnant at 16, but after my daughter was born, I started using again. I was evicted from my apartment and my daughter was taken away from me. By 18 I was in jail and knew things had to change. I enteredPhoenix House Santa Fe Springs and I came to love the program. It helped me get back on track with my education and be the person I was supposed to be. Today I’m 31, going on 3.5 years sober, and living in my own apartment with my children again.
