Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas (BCRC) Awarded Grant from Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure

May, 2012

BCRC has a strong commitment to providing certified patient navigation to underserved populations in a ten-county service area; minority women, uninsured and publicly insured women. The grant from Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for $ 45,665.80 will help provide patient navigation services for vulnerable and underserved populations diagnosed with breast cancer.

BCRC has a dedicated Spanish speaking Patient Navigator, Jessica Jones, who is essential to linking our clients to free or low cost services via community partnerships and reciprocal referrals. In Travis County, this patient navigator is the conduit to Brackenridge Hospital’s Shivers Breast Clinic working with providers to ensure rarely or never screened women, have access to services and breast health classes.

By providing breast health education to this vulnerable population, more women will be diagnosed earlier. They will understand how to access services and have a knowledgeable, culturally competent advocate to offer them guidance.  Access to clinical breast exams and mammography will mitigate obstacles of entering the Medicaid for Breast and Cervical Cancer Program for which an actual breast cancer diagnosis is the eligibility requirement - and a cost prohibitive procedure for underserved women. The outcome will be an increase in service provision to underserved and uninsured in Travis County.

About the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® We live here. We race here. We save lives here. One out of eight women here in the Austin area will have to fight breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s why, since 1999, the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has been hard at work here in the Austin area raising money to provide breast cancer screening, education and medical services as well as financial and emotional support. In fact, up to 75 percent of the money we raise each year is put to work right here in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties to improve the lives of everyone affected by this deadly disease. The remaining funds go to national research to find a cure for breast cancer once and for all. For more information about the organization, please visit or call 512-473-0900
