Waco businessman Bernard Rapoport, born in 1917 to a Communist Russian Jew, died on Thursday night, a "capitalist with a conscience" and influential philanthropist.
The 94-year-old Rapoport, known to all as B, made a fortune in the insurance business and gave much of it away to causes aimed at helping people who needed a lift. He was also a major Democratic Party donor.
Rapoport and his wife of 70 years, Audre, created a $50 million charitable foundation in 1978 that is dedicated to the University of Texas, Waco education and other community programs, and Israel.
"He saw philanthropy as a real debt to be paid," said Rapoport's granddaughter, Abby, an Austin journalist.
