A Transformational Evening

I want to thank the amazing team of board, staff and volunteers who helped make our San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Tribute a success. As has been said before, it takes a village. More than $128,725 was raised, with the proceeds directly supporting our youth initiates. It was a special evening for the inductees, Stan Bonewitz, Bruce Bowen, David Hill, Leticia Morales-Bisaro, and Ltc. John Russell, who are now officially part of an elite group. Congratulations to Jim Tsakopulos who won our raffle and selected a trip to the Tony Awards. It was a wonderful occasion to see the effect of the transformational power of sport. Championship Basketball Returns to San Antonio
The top eight teams in the country will vie for the national title when San Antonio Sports and St. Mary’s University host the 2012 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship March 20, 21 & 23 at Greehey Arena. There are several FREE community events that are part of the championship:
  • A youth basketball clinic with the WNBA’s Marie Ferdinand-Harris and St. Mary’s University Women’s Basketball team is offered for students in grades 2-6 on Thursday, March 22 at 5:30 p.m.

  • High school athletes and their parents are invited to find their path to the collegiate student-athlete experience by attending an education session presented by the NCAA Eligibility Center on Tuesday, March 20 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s University’s University Center. This is an opportunity to explore what it takes to qualify for and earn athletic scholarships at all collegiate levels.

  • San Antonio Sports has a limited number of FREE game tickets available for elementary and middle school groups to attend the game(s) of their choice. Group tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and the deadline for requests is March 16. E-mail to get details.

To purchase tickets or register for the youth clinic or eligibility seminar, visit or e-mail or call 210.820.2104.

Diver & Coach Score at State Meet
Congratulations to Christopher (Christo) Law who came in second at the UIL swimming and diving state meet held recently in Austin. Christo missed winning by only 1.95 points! It was an exciting end to the season for the freshman at Marshall High School, and his coach Tommy Law. At the meet, Tommy was named 5A Boys Diving Coach of the Year by the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association members. Nathan Gonzales, who attends Reagan High School, came in third. Tommy, Christo and Nathan are part of Alamo Area Aquatics Diving, which is the site of the Community Olympic Development program in diving. The CODP is a partnership between San Antonio Sports and the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Additionally, Christo was just selected to participate in the 2012 International Youth Diving Meet in Dresden, Germany based on his performance in the 3-meter event at the 2011 Jr. National Championship last summer. The meet will be April 26-29.

Fencing Program
San Antonio Sports will no longer offer a fencing program. It was a difficult decision, as fencing was our first Dreams for Youth (DFY) sport. The decision was based on a lack of funding and low participation. Originally, it was anchored out of Palo Alto College and taught by Vinnie Bradford, Olympic team member, Pan American medalist, and kinesiology professor and coach. Long-time DFY coach José Sanchez was one of Vinnie’s students.

The strong beginnings were rooted in a program that both supported a faculty member/coach salary while at the same time, ensuring that a program was offered to the community as well. The fencing program was very strong in this scenario and continued to flourish for years with many outstanding results in competitions and fencers earning collegiate scholarships, qualifying for World, Pan Am and even Olympic teams.

San Antonio Sports board member and Olympic fencer Dr. Stacey Johnson believes that fencing will have a strong future in a new facility to be built at the University of the Incarnate Word as part of the Bexar County venues program. “I believe strongly that for fencing to be viable and strong in San Antonio, it would be best if it could be grounded and supported in a collegiate environment such as UIW. The marriage of the collegiate environment along with some open club hours to generate revenue seems like the best opportunity for success in the future.”

Once the UIW facility opens in August, San Antonio Sports will work UIW to ensure that boys and girls in the community have opportunities to once again participate in a viable fencing program.
