 Message from the President

Dear Friends,

At Phoenix House, community is one of our core values. The men, women, and young people in our care learn that individual actions can affect the entire community—whether it’s their peers in treatment, or their family and friends at home. As an organization, we model this principle by making a difference in the communities we serve.

In this issue, we celebrate Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic for its fifty years of community service. We also commend our programs across the country for helping their neighborhoods become safer and healthier. Most importantly, we celebrate people in recovery like Bryan, a dedicated husband and father who continues to live by the lessons he learned at Phoenix House twenty years ago.

Stories like Bryan’s would not be possible without you, our community of supporters, and we hope you’ll continue to find new ways to be part of the Phoenix House family.

Warm regards,

Howard Meitiner
President and CEO

          50 Years of Serving
             the Community

This year, Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic (PHMA) marks its 50th Anniversary. From its humble beginnings in 1962 in the basement of Walker Chapel Church to its recent affiliation with Phoenix House, PHMA has maintained its primary focus: Providing client-centered, quality treatment to individuals struggling with addiction—first, as Alcoholic Rehabilitation, Inc., then as Vanguard Services Unlimited, and now as a part of the Phoenix House family. Valorie, an alum of PHMA’s Demeter House, writes, “My journey out from the darkness has been monumental and life-saving. None of this would have been possible without help from Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic.” PHMA has served over 30,000 individuals like Valorie since that first meeting convened in the church basement.

   Phoenix House Career
Academy Goes "Farm Fresh"

Clients at our
Phoenix House Career Academy in Brooklyn, NY learn that a healthy lifestyle is a major part of recovery. Now, the Career Academy is helping the entire neighborhood get a nutritional boost by hosting the DUMBO/Vinegar Hill share market. Every three weeks in the winter, and every week in the summer, we open our doors to neighbors to pick up their vegetables and other farm fresh offerings. As our lobby bustles with neighborhood residents, the bountiful crates of fresh vegetables reinforce the importance of healthy foods to our clients and staff.  To learn more about the share market, click here.

 True Story: Bryan

After my parents divorced when I was ten, I started using drugs to cover up my feelings and soften my pain. I stole from my family to support my addiction and was eventually kicked out of my house. I had no place to go, and at that point it was either death or jail. I was nineteen when I entered Phoenix House of Orange County. I came clean about my drug habit and my lifestyle. I learned to forgive myself and to live honestly and guilt-free. Phoenix House helped me mend my broken relationships and build new ones—and gave me the tools to sustain my recovery.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and love is in the air—Twitter love, that is. For our next Twitter chat, on February 13 at 7 PM EST, we’re once again teaming up with The Fix, this time to co-host a discussion about relationships and recovery. We’ll ask provocative questions about how sobriety affects the dating scene, partner dynamics, and sex life. Yes, we’re going there!  Be prepared for our most stimulating - and intimate - chat yet. To find out more and to RSVP, click here.
