FWSO Presents Mahler Symphony No. 4
Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra

October, 2011

FORT WORTH – The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra continues its project of exploring the complete symphonies of Gustav Mahler with the composer’s Symphony No. 4, presented Oct. 7-9 at Bass Performance Hall. Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts the orchestra with guest soprano Ilana Davidson. Also on the program: Sebastián Vergara’s Awakening of the Species.

Mahler rose to fame as one of the most imposing and innovative conductors in the late nineteenth century—an achievement that eventually began to be outweighed by his incredible power as a composer of large-scale symphonies and songs. He left an amazing legacy that combines Romanticism, programmatic inspiration, nature reminiscences, sardonic humor, ecstatic visions and inspired orchestration—all assuring him firm if belated recognition as one of the greatest symphonists of all time.

The Symphony No. 4 is the sunniest and, at well under one hour, one of the shortest of Mahler’s symphonies, at under an hour. For a detailed description of the piece, read our program notes here:
