Sanctuary Life is Busy!

InternsIt's been a busy few weeks here at IEAS, as we are sure many of you have seen through our Facebook, Blog, and other updates! After two weeks of no interns, our keepers, Christi, Trish, and Nissa, were ready for the fall group to arrive and start to learn the ropes at the Sanctuary! Now, Alex, Betsy, Megan, Jennifer, Amber, and Tara are surrounded by that furry beauty we have all come to know and love! They are taking in huge amounts of information and, in addition to our daily routines, have the opportunity to help with a large number of Sanctuary projects, such as cementing, PVC piping, and building houses!

Kimberly's HouseSpeaking of houses, you would be hard pressed to find a time in the past few months when Roy, our Maintenance Supervisor, and Richard, Director, haven't been welding, cutting, attaching, fixing, and rebuilding twenty year old houses for the feline residents of IEAS alongside dedicated volunteers and community service individuals. The new houses will have improved safety features for both the protection of the cats, and the safety of the staff. Khera's has just been finished, Kimberly's is in the works, and we have three more lined up! It is our HOPE that soon, Karen, and our new tigers, Danvir and Sajani, will have spacious and comfortable new houses to relax in! We are also hoping to enlarge Danvir and Sajani's pool, so they can comfortably enjoy it together. To change these hopes into reality, we need your help! Khera's HouseThese three houses and one pool will cost us about $10,000 in materials total. Luckily, we have some great volunteers who have promised to help us build the houses so the labor will be free, though we may reward them with some donuts in the mornings! A big thanks to Billy, George, and Matt for their assistance in helping to build the last few houses! We also want to thank the community service department in Decatur, TX for allowing individuals to complete their community service hours by working them off at IEAS. In the past year, over 6,000 hours of community service have been completed here, and the free labor they have done has been immensely helpful!

We will be setting up a thermometer so you can all stay updated on how close we are to reaching our goal. We understand that this letter falls on difficult times for everyone, but remember, every dollar counts! Do what you can and we can promise you that the cats whose lives YOU helped change, will be grateful for what you have given!

September Birthdays

Duchess Duchess

Female Cougar
Born September 8, 2004
Arrived: March 8, 2011

Duchess is quite the sneaky girl! She is one of the most instinctual cats at the Sanctuary, always ready to hunt and prowl. She hasn't been here long, but every day she gets more comfortable and has even started to visit with her most trusted friends in the evenings! This beautiful cougar turns 7 this year and we're so glad she's at IEAS so we can celebrate with her!

Mau Mau

Male Cheetah
Born September 21, 2003
Arrived: February 23, 2004

Mau is the Sanctuary's only cheetah and he does the species proud! He is a very regal cat who loves to lay on top of his favorite hill, above his waterfall, looking out over the other habitats and animals. He truly enjoys a visit with his favorite companions and we love to hear his chirps from the comfort of his house!

Prince Prince

Male Bengal Tiger
Born September 23, 2004
Arrived: March 8, 2011

Prince is one of the newest tiger residents of IEAS and has really settled in well. He is turning 7 this year and we are sure he will spend his birthday lying upside in his house all day, then lounging on his favorite perch in the evening. We hope he will have a good romp with his prized toy – his big, green pickle!
