Did you know?

There is no fee to adopt from the foster care system! Whether you are working directly with the State or with a private nonprofit agency, it does not matter – none of these agencies will charge you a fee to adopt.

Many of you have probably heard that it costs $25,000 to adopt a child…or something along those lines. That does not apply to adoptions from the foster care system!

From the Executive Director

Dear Friends of the Adoption Coalition of Texas,

On May 17th and 18th, our Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Recruiters and I attended the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption Summit  in Columbus, Ohio.  This was such an informative and inspiring meeting and we all came back with renewed vigor in seeking “Forever Families” for the children we serve.  Among the most inspiring experiences we had while there was the awards ceremony for recruiters who had demonstrated exceptional service.  One participant was recognized for finding a home for a physically and mentally handicapped 17 year old that had the longest stay in the state of Florida foster care system at the time!  There are truly some amazing adoptive families and recruiters out there doing their best to find homes for every available child and we have two of the best in Grace Lindgren and Stephanie Berka!

The second equally inspiring experience at the Summit was when a panel of young people spoke about their adoption experience as teenagers from the system.  These brave and talented young people helped us all understand how important the youths biological family, their culture and their peer environment is to them and how important it is for them to be accepted as “equal” family members by other children in the home.

We appreciate the support and encouragement we get from you throughout the year as we seek to find “Forever Families” for these deserving children.  We celebrate every adoption that happens for these kids. Events like the Summit and words of encouragement from you help us to keep going when the days are long and difficult.  Thanks for your support!  Together, we are making a positive difference in the world for these children.

Sadly, in a closing note, I must say farewell to the Adoption Coalition of Texas as I have accepted a position in San Antonio where my wife has been working since February.  Although I will continue to serve children in the foster care system, I will never lose my zeal for finding permanent homes for these children through adoption or family reunification.

Lisa Reed, Director of the Heart Gallery of Central Texas  and Coordinator of the weekly Forever Families segment on YNN News, will be the interim director of the Adoption Coalition of Texas.  Lisa has served the Adoption Coalition for over six years and has provided much needed support to all of the projects, programs and activities carried out by the Coalition over the years.  The Coalition will be in very capable hands until a new Executive Director can be hired.

Bruce Thompson

Executive Director

From the Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of the Adoption Coalition of Texas would like to express our appreciation to Bruce for his commitment to the mission of the organization and the time and energy he expended furthering the organization’s goals during his short tenure as Executive Director of the Coalition.  We appreciate his desire to join his wife in San Antonio and wish him the very best as he assumes the responsibilities of his new position.

We are thrilled to have Lisa Reed move into the Executive Director’s position until a new Executive Director can be hired.  Lisa has broad, extensive experience with the activities of the Coalition and is just the right person to fill these very big shoes during the interim.

The Board would also like to join Bruce, Lisa and the other staff of the Coalition in thanking you for your belief that all children need families and in your support of this cause.  Without you, the Adoption Coalition would be nothing.  Please bear with us during this transition.

Kid’s Corner – Meet  Maribel, Isabel, Noah and Tereso

Maribel (15), Noah (11), Tereso (8) and Isabel (14) and are a fabulous foursome looking forward to finding a forever family.  As a group, they are smart, polite, engaging, active, and athletic.  They hope to find a family that will allow them to stay together as well as encourage and support them in reaching their full potential. Take a look at their Forever Families segment here.

Special Thanks

We would like to send out a very special thanks to Randy Jeter and Todd Garrett and all of the amazing volunteers who put together the Skiin’ with the Galilean ski camp in early June. It was a fantastic two days in Marble Falls for over 223 foster kids and family members in Texas. You really gave something special to these kids in the time you spent teaching them how to ski, wake board, tube, etc. as well as how to have way more fun than should be allowed eating pudding! Thank you also for generously providing both lunch and dinner for everyone for the day. We were delighted to be a part of it again and look forward to next year’s event.

Save the Date!
