I’ve long said that the nonprofit sector is a “lagging economic indicator,” meaning that even though the rest of the economy may show signs of recovery (which ours is, but not yet convincingly), the nonprofit sector will tend to “lag” behind. This is most often because at the outset of a recession, government spending tends to increase (as it did with federal stimulus funds in 2008-2010) and nonprofits often benefit from that increased spending. This May, college students are graduating in the thousands with a degree and the drive to succeed. However, an estimated seventy percent of these college grads will be unemployed and may stay unemployed for the next year. Friday, May 13 marked my six year anniversary at Greenlights as the Director of Consulting Services. Truth be told, I never thought I’d stick around this long. Prior to taking this position, I never stayed with one organization longer than three years, let alone one job.
