The Strength of Shared Beliefs

Tuesday Memo

May 17, 2011

This past Sunday new art pieces were unveiled at IM.  The art pieces are the work of a joint project between the Boniuk Center at Rice and the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH) called Sacred Sites Quest.  The project brought together 24 very diverse high school students from 12 different schools who visited 11 religious sites and then capped everything by creating four pieces of art that captured their sense of the commonalities that all religions share.  IM was chosen as the host site because of the prominent role we play in interfaith work and our central location in Montrose.  The four pieces are now mounted on the front of our building facing Montrose Blvd.  Enjoy these photos below of the pieces and spread the word!  This is one more example how great organizations collaborate every day here in Houston.  Parents and friends came by for the festive unveiling - lots of proud Moms and Dads were on hand.  The project was funded by a generous grant from the Herzstein Foundation.

Two weeks ago IM held its annual Tapestry Gala - this year honoring Arthur Schechter and Fred Zeidman.  Under the chair of Philamena and Arthur Baird the evening was a spectacular success.  We raised just a bit less than $900,000 which makes this the most successful fundraising event in IM's history.  We are very grateful to the growing list of supporters who come from all parts of our community.  We look forward to seeing you next year!

One more item of IM interest:

·         With Hurricane season quickly coming, IM's Office of Disaster Preparedness and Response (ODPR) is hard at work getting ready.  One of the things we promote each year is the annual Hurricane Workshop that is sponsored by the National Weather Service, the City of Houston and Centerpoint Energy.  This conference is open to everyone and it is free!  There are all sorts of activities for adult and kids, and anyone who is new to Houston really needs to attend to learn how to be prepared.  IM is proud to be one of the key partners in making this conference a success.  To learn more visit :

The manhunt for Osama bin Ladin is thankfully over.  Now that he is gone I think most of us feel a sense of relief and closure.  Evil must be faced squarely and it is assuring that our government never took its eye off the ball.

That said, I found the celebration of his death a little unsettling.  Though I believe that there are times when justice is best served by a strong arm, I am not sure that it is ever appropriate to celebrate the death of any individual.

For those of us who believe that every human being is blessed with a spark of divinity, celebrating the extinction of that spark diminishes us.  There is no joy in taking someone's life, even when it is necessary to save others.

I celebrate the achievement of our brave soldiers who executed their mission flawlessly.  I celebrate the wisdom and courage of our leaders who made the decision to act.  And I celebrate that justice has been served.  I just can't celebrate the death of any man no matter how evil he may have been because in the end life, all life, is sacred in God's eye.

Talk to you in two weeks.
