Texas State speech team wins NFA nationaltitle
Texas State University

April, 2011

The Elton Abernathy Forensics Society, the competitive speech team at Texas State University-San Marcos, won the President’s III Division at the National Forensics Association’s (NFA) National Tournament, April 15-18, at Illinois State University in Peoria, Ill.

Other top ten finishers included second-place Hastings College, Neb., fourth-place University of Mississippi, and seventh-place University of Wisconsin.  This is the first NFA title for Texas State.

NFA classifies schools in three divisions depending on the number of entries a school has entered in the tournament.  President’s III Division included schools with 1-14 entries.

Individuals who advanced to the elimination rounds at the tournament included  Samin Agha, a senior political science major from Houston, who made the sweet sixteen round in Lincoln-Douglas debate and quarter-finals in extemporaneous speaking; Brandon McCasland, a senior communication studies major from Bay City, a national semi-finalist in dramatic interpretation; and Jaysin Spradley, a senior communication studies major from Boling, national quarter-finalist in dramatic interpretation.
