   Letter from the President

As we look forward to the 14th annual Joe's Run on March 26, we are grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who make this event possible each year. We are also proud of the spirit Joe's Run fosters not only among the volunteers but also among the thousands of runners and - perhaps most important - among our residents themselves. Whether volunteering, running on the Sam House team, or cheering from the sidelines, our residents appreciate the energy and dedication that goes into making Joe's Run a success. Read on to learn more about this exciting event, the people who make it happen, and another sports event at Samaritan House - the recent visit by three members of the Fort Worth Brahmas, our city's professional hockey team.

Joe's Run Hits the Streets for 14th Year

By Emily Capelli, Intern

It's time again for one of Fort Worth's biggest most exciting benefit runs. On Saturday, March 26, the 14th annual Joe's Run kicks off at 8 a.m. at Samaritan House on the Near South Side. A 10K run has been added to the ever-popular 5K walk/run for those who'd like to go that extra distance. All proceeds from Joe's Run benefit Samaritan House, providing housing and hope for homeless men and women living with HIV/AIDS.

To register before the day of the race, stop by Samaritan House at 929 Hemphill or click here to register online.

Jake Richter: Running to the Aid of Samaritan House

Emily Capelli, Intern

Jake Richter

Joe's Run would not be possible without the invaluable efforts of enthusiastic volunteers. One of the most important volunteers for Joe's Run this year is Jake Richter, who will be managing the food court. This crucial position involves recruiting the local restaurants that will serve up tasty treats for runners, volunteers, and spectators, and being on hand on race day to make sure everything runs smoothly on Magnolia Green. In addition to his Joe's Run responsibilities, Jake also serves as vice-chair of the Samaritan House board of directors.

Brahmas Tell Tales in Sam House

Hannah Knipp, Intern

Men, women, and children alike gathered together on Wednesday, January 26, to meet three local celebrities, hockey players Steven Later, Roger Maxwell, and Nathan Saunders of the Fort Worth Brahmas. The players came to Samaritan House with their equipment, jerseys, and fascinating stories, providing a fun and entertaining family event for our residents.

Participation in sports requires the same kind of discipline and perseverance that is necessary for our residents to succeed in their struggle to restore their health and regain independence. Hearing the stories of the Brahmas players or watching fellow residents crossing the finish line at Joe's Run provides inspiration and positive role models as residents do the hard work of putting their lives back together. The other key element is team spirit. As intern Emily Capelli points out in her profile of board member and volunteer Jake Richter, at Joe's Run everyone is really on the same team, the team that supports Samaritan House. If you are interested in becoming part of the Sam House team, whether by participating in Joe's Run as a volunteer or runner, or by giving of your time or resources in other ways, we welcome you to join us. Please visit our web site at to find out how you can help.
