Witte Museum Presents Magic Lantern Shows Sat., Mar. 12
Witte Museum

March, 2011

The Witte Museum is pleased to host a Magic Lantern Show for the third year in a row, with two showings at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 12. Jack Judson will delight crowds with a magnificent double magic lantern from the 1800s, The Rajah, from the Judson Collection at the Magic Lantern Castle Museum. Join us for the history of the magic lantern, dramatic lighting of the limelight and projections of original images hand painted on glass.

As a special highlight to this year’s presentations, Judson will project the never-before-seen original art by Joseph Boggs Beale—wash drawings depicting the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner. In addition, the original works will be on view and a rousing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner will play during the projections, in commemoration of the War of 1812.

The magic lantern is the earliest form of a slide projector, featuring a concave mirror behind a light source that gathers light and projects it through a slide painted with an image. The first published image of the device appeared in the late 1600s. Images were painted on glass and projected on walls, cloth drapes and, sometimes, on a wet cloth from behind the "screen". To see images appear from a lantern or onto a screen, was "magical" during this time period. Magic lantern shows were enjoyed around the world for more than 300 years, but are not often seen today.

Both Magic Lantern Shows are included with museum admission. For more information call 210.357.1900 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              210.357.1900      end_of_the_skype_highlighting or visit
